Marvel Disney Plus: What did we learn from the first looks?
At the event, Kevin Feige presented the first of several trailers for shows fans have been waiting for.
Marvel Disney Plus: The Falcon and the Winter Soldier
Fans got a good look at the highly anticipated The Falcon and the Winter Soldier during the presentation, and it’s been described as a Marvel film in six parts.
The production values from the trailer are exquisite—the locations, the effects, and the costumes are par for the course for a Marvel film. The tone of the show, however, is a little inconsistent.
For the most part, it came across as much more serious than one would have expected, instead of the buddy-comedy that one would assume would be prominent given the characters’ interactions in the films.
It’s obvious from the trailer that Sam Wilson /Falcon (Anthony Mackie) is struggling with the burden of becoming Captain America. He hasn’t taken on the mantle yet. While on a globe-hopping mission with Bucky Barnes/ Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), we see that Bucky is trying to convince Sam why it’s important for him to take on this role.
There are a lot of spectacular action set pieces in the trailer, which will excite plenty of fans. Hopefully, Sam and Bucky’s relationship will move beyond the incongruous banter seen in the trailer.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will stream from March 19, 2021.
Marvel Disney Plus: Loki
Tom Hiddleston’s Loki is probably the MCU’s most popular character. He’s been killed off more times than we can count, but following the events of Avengers: Endgame, Loki has been given a new lease on life.
After stealing the Tesseract, Loki finds himself involved with the TVA—Time Variance Authority—and he’s as confused as the fans watching this trailer.
The feel of this show is chaotic, which suits the God of Mischief. Feige described Loki as a mystery-thriller, and it looks like Loki is either stepping into the role as some kind of time-cop (multiverse time-cop?), or he’s making amends for his past sins.
The trailer footage shows Loki both as a prisoner being confronted by his failures, and a free god out to take down his brother. Looks like there’s a lot to pack in here.
Other members of the TVA are played by Owen Wilson and Gugu Mbatha-Raw. Time works differently in the TVA, which means these characters will know much more than Loki.
Will the show intersect with other Marvel properties or re-visit them? The trailer may be unconventional, but the show will undoubtedly be… glorious.
Loki will stream from May 2021.
Marvel Disney Plus: WHAT IF…?
The What If…? comic book issues of Marvel provided new perspectives for many of our favorite characters. These alternate storylines would be told by Uatu, the Watcher assigned to observe the happenings on Earth across the multiverse.
Now, fans can join Uatu in the animated Marvel show WHAT IF…? The trailer for the show includes stunning animation and many MCU cast members are also reprising their roles to voice the characters.
Many characters will take on different mantles, or their lives will deviate because of a split-second decision. The trailer showcased a reality where Hayley Atwell’s Peggy Carter takes the serum and becomes Captain America; there’s a world where young T’Challa was “rescued” by Yondu and became Star-Lord. But, in an alternate storyline, Doctor Stranger is fighting himself? And, is that zombie Captain America fighting the Winter Soldier?
The trailer also includes the scene of Hawkeye readying to take down Thor as he attempts to retrieve his hammer, Mjolnir. The episode could investigate how events would have been altered had Hawkeye been given the go ahead to shoot.
And there’s so much more! WHAT IF…? is coming to Disney Plus in Summer 2021.
Marvel Disney Plus: Ms. Marvel
Adding to the much-needed diversity in the Marvel universe is Iman Vellani, who will be playing the beloved comic book character Kamala Khan in Ms. Marvel.
The featurette presented during the event demonstrated the importance of the character, and how relatable she is. We didn’t see Vellani in costume, but the footage from the show made it obvious that Kamala is going to come across as a regular teenager, who just happens to be Pakistani-American and an Inhuman with superpowers.
There is a team of diverse creators behind-the-scenes who will be bringing Ms. Marvel and her story to the screen. It’s going to be about family, which is a huge part of Kamala’s characterization.
We’ll have to wait and find out how Kamala’s powers are rendered on the show, but we can’t wait to see Kamala in action, embiggening and defeating bad guys.
Ms. Marvel is coming to Disney Plus in late 2021.
Marvel Disney Plus should keep Marvel fans occupied for a long time. All upcoming Marvel shows will be streaming on Disney Plus.
