Sex and the City revival: Where is Samantha Jones?
By Mads Lennon
Sex and the City is returning, but Kim Cattrall will not be reprising her role as Samantha.
Yesterday was a big day for Sex and the City fans as it was officially confirmed that Sex and the City: And Just Like That — a new chapter in the acclaimed HBO series — would be happening on HBO Max soon. But while stars Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis have all been confirmed to return, Kim Cattrall has not.
Despite playing the show’s breakout character (and arguably the most popular), Samantha Jones, there have long been rumors of problems on-set between Cattrall and Parker. Unfortunately for fans, Cattrall will not be returning for the revival, and it’s unclear what will happen to her character.
Will Samantha be recast, written off or killed off?
It would be foolish for the writers to kill Samantha. The only thing that would cause is widespread mutiny from fans of the show who are already upset that she won’t be returning. I can’t imagine that they would go down that path.

The most viable option would be for Samantha to be recast or written off. If I had to guess, I would say that she will be written off since that seems like the path of least resistance. However, Kim Cattrall has gone on record saying she wouldn’t be opposed to the producers recasting the role, specifically with a non-white actress.
Over the past few years, critics have taken another look at Sex and the City. It’s hard not to look back at the show now and realize how problematic many aspects of the series were. From racism to biphobia to transphobia, the series hasn’t aged well.
During an interview with Piers Morgan, Cattrall recommended they recast her role.
“It’s a great part. I played it past the finish line and then some, and I loved it. And another actress should play it. Maybe they could make it an African-American Samantha Jones, or a Hispanic Samantha Jones.”
While it’s possible the series could go down that route in the future, should the revival run for more than one season, I don’t think it’s going to happen immediately.
Parker recently “set the record straight” via her Instagram comments to say, ”Samantha isnt part of this story. But she will always be part of us. No matter where we are or what we do.”
If she’s not part of this story, I’d assume the writers will simply say she’s off galavanting through Europe or something equally fabulous.
