Brie Larson-led Lessons in Chemistry series lands at Apple TV+
By Mads Lennon
Brie Larson is headed to Apple TV Plus for a new drama series titled Lessons in Chemistry, Variety exclusively reports. The Captain Marvel actress will star and executive produce the show, which received a straight-to-series order from Apple. It was reportedly a very competitive bidding situation, which isn’t too surprising considering Larson’s star power.
Erin Brockovich screenwriter Susannah Grant (who received an Academy Award nomination for her work on the Julia Roberts-led film) will write and executive produce the series alongside Larson. The publication also notes that Jason Bateman and Michael Costigan will executive produce Lessons in Chemistry under their Aggregate Films banner, which also produced acclaimed series like A Teacher, Ozark and The Outsider.

The show is based on a debut novel from Bonnie Garmus. Not only is Garmus an author, but she is also a copywriter and science editor. The series is about a young woman named Elizabeth Zott (Larson) who is forced to put her dreams of becoming a scientist on hold after she gets pregnant.
Set in the early 1960s, Lessons in Chemistry will explore the frustrating limitations placed on women at the time when they were not often held back from excelling in professional fields to ensure they could be homemakers and mothers.
After getting fired from her lab, Elizabeth decides to accept a job hosting a television cooking show to reach a nation of “overlooked housewives – and the men who are suddenly listening – a lot more than recipes, all the while craving a return to her true love: science.”
Lessons in Chemistry is Brie Larson’s second project with Apple TV Plus.
It looks like Larson is looking to substantially further her television acting career as Lessons in Chemistry is the second Apple TV Plus series she’s set to star in. It was previously announced that she would star in another series based on the real-life experiences of Amaryllis Fox, an undercover CIA operative. That show is based on Fox’s memoir Life Undercover: Coming of Age in the CIA.
Unfortunately, that project is currently on hold due to the ongoing pandemic. Larson still has to shoot Captain Marvel 2, so it’s unclear how the scheduling will work out for these new series. As for Garmus’s novel, it isn’t expected to be published until spring 2022, meaning the series won’t launch until sometime next year at the earliest.
