Michelle Pfeiffer joins Showtime’s First Lady drama: Who is she playing?

Michelle Pfeiffer joins Viola Davis in Showtime’s First Lady series.
In a new report from The Hollywood Reporter, it was confirmed that Michelle Pfeiffer had joined Showtime’s upcoming First Lady series alongside Viola Davis and director Susanne Bier. Pfeiffer will play Betty Ford in the anthology series while Davis is set to portray Michelle Obama.
Bier, whose previous credits include The Undoing and The Night Manager, will direct every episode of The First Lady and she will also serve as an executive producer.
Amy Israel, the Executive Vice President of Scripted Programming at Showtime, released a statement on the casting, saying, “Michelle Pfeiffer and Susanne Bier have joined the brilliant and incomparable Viola Davis to bring the remarkable stories of these women into urgent, engrossing, and long overdue focus.”

She also added that “Michelle brings authenticity, vulnerability, and complexity to all her roles, and Susanne is a visionary director who commands the screen with fierce honesty and a singular visual style. With these formidable artists in front of and behind the camera, we couldn’t be more thrilled — especially at this unique moment in time for our nation — about the powerful promise of The First Lady.”
The upcoming Showtime series is set to focus on Ford, Obama, and Eleanor Roosevelt and how they shaped the world during their time in the White House. Roosevelt has yet to be cast. As for Pfeiffer, this will be her first series regular career in several decades. Ford was the first lady during Gerald Ford’s presidency from 1974 to 1977 and was one of the most politically active first ladies in American history. She also struggled with alcoholism and went public with her struggles to raise awareness about substance abuse.
