9-1-1 Season 4 recap: Episode 2, Alone Together
By Ariba Bhuvad
9-1-1 Season 4 continues its dramatic pace from last week’s premiere as Hollywood and the Los Angeles area continue to crumble in the midst of a mudslide and an earthquake. We last left Athena (Angela Bassett) trying to get an agoraphobic woman out of the house before the mudslide took them down with it.
It was a bit too late unfortunately as Athena and the woman go under with the house as it slips off the edge. While waiting for rescue efforts, Athena learns that the woman hadn’t left her home in the last seven years because she and her sister were in a car accident. She obviously survived but her sister died, and as a result, she couldn’t find it in herself to face the world after that.

Meanwhile, back at the 9-1-1 call center, May (Corinne Massiah) is trying to assess the situation with Maddie’s (Jennifer Love Hewitt) help. Knowing her mother is out there in the middle of the chaos isn’t doing well for her first at the center. Instead of trying to get a handle on her emotions, she tries to push Maddie to make decisions prematurely.
But with Maddie’s maternal instincts and the ability to do her job as well as she does, she’s able to guide Maddie towards doing this stressful job the right way. Hats off to Maddie for always taking this job in stride–she just might be the best 9-1-1 dispatcher we’ve ever seen.
9-1-1 Season 4 spells new beginnings for Maddie and Chimney
Speaking of Maddie, 9-1-1 Season 4 has been off to a bit of a lonely start for her. She has spent most of the pandemic pregnant, and without Chimney (Kenneth Choi) by her side. Being the worrywart he is, Chimney has opted to stay away from Maddie to keep her safe and eliminate any chances of her contracting COVID.
Instead, she’s been living with his half-brother, Albert (John Harlan Kim), who has been taking care of all her needs. However, things take a turn when Chimney rescues a group of women, one of which gives birth while stuck in a house. Bringing life into the world has a strong impact on him, and he ultimately decides to move back in with Maddie, much to her surprise and relief.
Who is Buck’s “new girl”?
We’ve been hearing about Buck’s (Oliver Stark) new COVID crush since the 9-1-1 Season 4 premiere. And we finally learn her mystery identity at the end of this week’s episode, and it’s not what you think. In fact, it’s not someone he’s seeing romantically at all, it’s his therapist!
Yes, that’s right. Buck has been talking to a therapist and been working on himself during the pandemic! Kudos to 9-1-1 Season 4 for taking this character down a path that has been much needed after everything he’s been going through.
I’m excited to see where his story takes him this season!
