2. Shows like Bridgerton: Gentleman Jack
Gentleman Jack is a rather unconventional period piece, though that is definitely one of the best things about it. Based on the real-life diaries of Anne Lister, this HBO series follows Anne (Suranne Jones) as she returns to her home of Shibden Hall. She starts off simply wanting to seduce –yes, seduce– her wealthy neighbor Ann Walker (Sophie Rundle) for something to do and possibly even for money but ends up truly falling for her.
Epic love story against all odds? Check. Beautiful costumes? Check. Intriguing plots? Check. Steamy and romantic moments? Check.
Gentleman Jack has it all. So while you’re waiting for Bridgerton Season 2, do yourself a favor and watch Gentleman Jack. If part of what you love about Bridgerton is the romance, then you would not want to miss this tale of two young women who love each other despite the difficulties they might face in their time period. You’ll be rooting for Anne and Ann along the way, just as you rooted for our Duke and Duchess.
So sit back and relax, because it’s time to discover Gentleman Jack.
1. Shows like Bridgerton: The Great
The final show on our list is actually the least like Bridgerton, but don’t you worry it still absolutely belongs on this list. While the show doesn’t really focus on an epic love story as Bridgerton does, it is definitely a wonderful period drama. While it takes place in Russia not England and is far more of a comedic tone, it is also a dramatic series. This show is called The Great and it’s available to stream on Hulu.
While you’re waiting for Bridgerton Season 2, you can enjoy the first season of The Great. This comedy-drama follows the intriguing rise of Catherine the Great (Elle Fanning). When she is betrothed to Peter (Nicholas Hoult), the Emperor of Russia, Catherine expects to find an epic love. What she finds instead is that her husband is an absolutely horrible person and needs to be overthrown.
So what does she do? With some help and inspiration from her maid Marial (Phoebe Fox), Count Orlo (Sacha Dhawan), and General Velementov (Douglas Hodge), she begins to stage a coup to overthrow Peter and install herself as empress of Russia. We are sure that some of Catherine’s antics will make you laugh, while other moments will move you to tears. Much like Bridgerton, The Great strikes the perfect balance between comedy and drama.
So watch The Great. You won’t regret it.
