Made for Love Season 1, Episode 2 recap: I Want a Divorce
By Mads Lennon
Made for Love Episode 2, “I Want a Divorce,” is mostly about Hazel trying to escape from Byron only to realize the entire thing is futile since she’s got a certified spy cam embedded in her brain.
The episode opens when the procedure itself. In the first episode, there was a brief moment where Hazel notices a piece of glass near the pool and has a brief memory of where it might have come from before it disappears. This time around, we see the scene play out in full.
Byron spiked Hazel’s drink, and when she fell unconscious, she swiped the concrete to the ground, where it shattered. Once asleep, Byron’s team of surgeons came in, shaved a small part of her head and inserted the brain chip without her knowing.
Fast-forward to the present, and Hazel is still trying to figure out how to get out of this. We learn she traveled to her dad’s house because they haven’t talked for more than 10 years, and Hazel knows that Byron understands their estrangement –– he would never expect Hazel to visit Herb. Plus, her dad is supposed to have an old plane. Unfortunately for Hazel, he sold the plane to a Voss family of rednecks.
Made for Love Episode 2 recap: Herringbone returns for Hazel.
The only thing she gets out of her dad’s house is a shotgun, which does come in handy when she runs into Herringbone again while trying to escape. Fingerless, Herringbone tries to make Hazel understand that he’s on her side. He’s the only person who can help her, but she doesn’t believe him.
Herringbone claims that he has a “cloaking device” (which looks like a shoe bag) to put over her head so that Byron won’t be able to hear or see what she sees. Hazel notices there is only one seat in Herringbone’s posh car. “Well, there’s the trunk.” Basically, he plans to put a bag over hazel’s head and throw her in the trunk.
Understandably, she’s not okay with that, and when Herringbone makes a move toward her, she shoots him in the foot, then she tries to get in the car and drive it, but it doesn’t go anywhere. She shoots Herringbone again while returning to her dad’s house. “Stop shooting me!” “Stop freaking me out!”
Herb takes Hazel to a local bar where the Voss family hangs out to see if he can get his plane back. On the way, he starts trying to suss out what exactly happened with the whole brain chip thing. He mentions that Bryon probably put a GPS on it, which Hazel hadn’t realized until now. So, she’s screwed no matter what.
Herb and Hazel go inside at the bar, leaving Diane (Herb’s “synthetic partner“) in the car. Herb’s reputation in town is shot these days since everyone considers him a pervert for hanging out with a sex doll after his wife/Hazel’s mother’s death from cancer.
Made for Love Episode 2 recap: Hazel asks Byron for a divorce.
He makes a deal with the Voss family. If he can stay on the mechanical bull longer than one of Mama Voss’s sons, they’ll give him the plane back. It doesn’t go according to plan. Instead, Hazel steals the keys off of her dad while he’s incapacitated by the bull ride and tries to leave but notices Shane Voss (Chris Bagnall) stealing Diane in the process. She runs after Shane to get Diane back and one of the bartenders (who Byron previously noticed made Hazel aroused based on her chip reading) knocked out Shane for her.
Ultimately, Herb and Hazel return to Herb’s house. He recommends she get a divorce, but Hazel doesn’t think Byron will ever let her go. Speak of the devil, when they get back to her dad’s house, Byron and his goons have swarmed the place.
Inside, Hazel finds Byron watching her camera feed on the television. “I thought we were happy.” I wasn’t.” Then Hazel ends the episode by asking him for a divorce.
