According to Variety, Alexander Skarsgård will be joining the cast of HBO’s Succession for season 3. Skarsgård will be playing a “big tech” CEO named Lukas Matsson, and it will be interesting to see how the character engages in the Roy family’s world of corruption, greed, and family dysfunction.

Although it’s not entirely clear what role this character will play, one can safely assume he’ll be entangled in the Roy family drama. At the heart of the crisis we know and love, the ruthless Logan (Brian Cox) must defend himself against a power-hungry candidate for succession in the family media empire, which has essentially ruined his relationship with his wife, Marcia (Hiam Abbass), and pit him most scandalously against his son, Kendall Roy (Jeremy Strong).

Where might Alexander Skarsgård fit within the Succession universe?

By the end of season 2, Kendall seemed to have the upper hand, exposing his father as the abusive conservative media mogul he is, while trying to keep the family brand above water (so as to pursue his own ambitions). Given the tone of the show, it’s plausible that Alexander Skarsgår will either be an openly hostile character or an ally whose particular goals could derail them all.  While this is obviously only speculative, it’s a fairly safe bet given the overall dynamics of the show and previous characters we have seen.

The basics of Succession

From creator Jesse Armstrong, and starring Cox, Strong, Kieran Culkin, Sarah Snook, and Matthew Macfadyen, Succession is executive produced by Armstrong, long-time collaborators Will Ferrell and Adam McKay (Saturday Night Live, Funny Or Die, Step Brothers, etc.), as well as New York Times essayist Frank Rich, and Scott Ferguson through Gary Sanchez Productions, Hyperobject Industries, and Project Zeus.

So, who is Alexander Skarsgård again?

Don’t know who Alexander Skarsgård is?  Hey, we can all forget things, or maybe just aren’t hip to information we’re told we need to know.  It happens, and it doesn’t always mean someone’s been living under a rock.  Also, if you haven’t really heard much about Succession,  you can always look through Show Snob’s old recaps, in addition to watching the previous episodes..

Anyway:  Alexander Skarsgård might be playing someone who embodies the fearless entrepreneurial spirit of the series, though hopefully without its family dysfunctions. On that note (and as you may be aware), the Swedish actor is from a family full of actors, including Stellan Skarsgård, Bill Skarsgård, Gustaf Skarsgård, and Valter Skarsgård. Alexander Skarsgård may himself be familiar to HBO audiences, as he’s appeared on series like True Blood, Big Little Lies, and Generation Kill. Most recently, you may have seen him in Adam Wingard’s Godzilla vs. Kong.
