Fans are getting increasingly excited for the upcoming Friends reunion on HBO Max, especially as the cast has started to tease and promote the special more. Recently, Monica Geller herself, Courteney Cox visited The Ellen Show to discuss the reunion and the iconic Friends fountain.

While the opening sequence for the beloved sitcom features all of the cast members frolicking in the fountain, it wasn’t actually as much fun for the cast to film as it is to watch. During the intro to the show, Cox is joined by her co-stars Matthew Perry, Jennifer Aniston, Matt LeBlanc, Lisa Kudrow and David Schwimmer to dance and play in the water, but they really were in there getting soaking wet, for hours!

As you can imagine, that’s not exactly the most fun way to spend your day. In Cox’s own words, it wasn’t the best way to spend her time because it’s not really fun “to be dancing in the fountain for hours and hours.”

She added, “We were in that fountain for a long time. Somebody thought that would just be really fun and let me tell you what happens.”

Matthew Perry had a “Chandler” reaction to filming the Friends fountain intro

And we all know that Perry plays the beloved character Chandler Bing, who happens to be Monica’s love interest, friend and eventual husband on the show. Well, Perry channeled his inner-Chandler to discuss his distaste for playing in the fountain for hours. Cox recalls him saying that he couldn’t “remember a time where I wasn’t in this fountain.”

The filming of this sequence occurred very early on in the production since it was the backdrop that played along with the theme song, “I’ll Be There For You” by The Rembrandts. Even though the cast was just getting to know each other, they had a great initial bonding moment in that sequence! There is no better way to get a group of people to bond than by giving them something to commiserate over.
