The official trailer for Hulu’s Nine Perfect Stangers recently dropped, and the series promises to be full of mystery, suspense, and smoothies. Based on the novel by Liane Moriarty (the author of Big Little Lies), the book quickly became a New York Times Best Seller and garnered a large fanbase, making it one of the most highly-anticipated shows of the year.

Check out the trailer and read on to explore the nine best moments from it!

1. Nicole Kidman’s performance

From Big Little Lies’ Celeste Wright to Moulin Rouge!’s Satine, Nicole Kidman has played some of the most iconic roles in both TV and film, disappearing into each one flawlessly. Nine Perfect Strangers looks like it’ll be no exception. From her accent to her intense, unblinking stare, she’s sure to imbue the show with unnerving energy as the mastermind behind the retreat. “Is Masha batshit, or is she the real deal?” Francis (Melissa McCarthy) asks at the end of the trailer — I can’t wait to find out.

2. Tranquillum House

Tranquillum House already feels like a character in and of itself. From the sharp, clean lines of the house’s contemporary architecture to the breathtaking waterfalls and other landscapes, the juxtaposition creates a unique vibe from the get-go. One thing is for sure: this show is going to be visually stunning.

3. Instant conflict

Not everybody is going to be a true believer in Masha’s methods. Lars (Luke Evans) claims that wellness retreats are “such crap,” and at one point, Tony (Bobby Cannavale) sarcastically says, “let’s meditate.” The instant tension between those putting on the retreat and those attending it will make for some explosive moments.

4. Melissa McCarthy’s eyewear

From her aviator sunglasses to her cat-eye reading glasses, Francis is going to serve looks. (Pun intended.)

5. Masha and Delilah

Avid fans of the book may have been surprised by one moment in particular: a short clip where it appears Masha and a retreat employee Delilah (Tiffany Boone), kiss. Is this moment real? A hallucination? A flashback? I guess we’ll have to wait and see!

6. Circle of graves

Several scenes in the trailer show the characters digging and lying in a circle of graves. Though we don’t know exactly what’s going on there yet, it’s certainly morbid and creates an unsettling tone.

7. Demons

Lars says to Napolean (Michael Shannon) that everyone on the retreat “complement[s] each other’s demons.” It’ll be interesting to find out what those demons are and dive into the lives of the attendees, and find out what brought them to sign up for it in the first place.

8. Mind Games

The trailer starts relatively harmless but soon evolves into something much darker and more mysterious. Towards the end, we see a montage of people gasping and behaving abnormally. What’s causing this behavior? And what does it mean? (Also: shoutout to Regina Hall, who’s playing Carmel. The small clips of her laughing and wiping her face are some of the most gripping of the entire trailer.)

9. “She picked nine people who needed to be in a place where they would try anything she wanted.”

So much to unpack in this single chilling line! What are Masha’s motives? And is she going to go too far to get what she wants? My gut tells me it’s certainly a possibility…
