It’s fall television season, which means it’s time to see what broadcast has to offer in a world where streaming rules. Tonight, The Wonder Years reboot premieres on ABC. Thus far, critics have positively received the reboot as one of the best-reviewed shows of the fall 2021 season.
Based on the 1988 series of the same name, The Wonder Years reboot is set in 1960s Montgomery, Alabama. This coming-of-age comedy follows a Black middle-class family, specifically from the perspective of imaginative 12-year-old Dean Williams (Elisha “EJ” Williams).
Apart from Williams, the series also stars Dulé Hill as Dean’s father Bill, Saycon Sengbloh as Dean’s mother Lillian, Laura Kariuki as Dean’s sister Kim, Amari O’Neil and Julian Lerner as Dean’s friends Cory and Brad, Milan Ray as Dean’s crush Keisa, and Allen Maldonado as the basketball coach, Coach Long.

The reboot premiere introduces us to the new characters comprising this story. Dean struggles to find out where he fits in in the pilot, as everyone in his family seems to have their niche except for him. His brother is an athlete, his sister is popular and has an active social life, his mother is brilliant, and his dad is just plain cool. So, where does Dean fit in?
In an effort to find his place, Dean tries to become “The Great Uniter” and organize the first integrated baseball game between his team and his friend Brad’s team.
