Acapulco is about twenty-something Maximo Gallardo (a role shared by Arrizon and Derbez) whose dream comes true when he is hired as a cabana boy at one of the most popular resorts in all of Acapulco.
Despite the lavish lifestyle presented by the resort, Maximo soon realizes that life there is complicated and includes navigating demanding clientele and a mercurial mentor. The series is told in Spanish and English and takes place in 1984, with Derbez narrating and playing the present-day version of the main character. The story is inspired by the film How to Be a Latin Lover.
