Will there be a Squid Game season 2? Has Netflix renewed it yet?
By Taylor Gates
If you’re like one of the millions of people across the globe, you might have seen Squid Game: the horror/drama (and sometimes even mystery and comedy) that’s taken over the world. The series quickly gained popularity after premiering on September 17th, sparking memes, Halloween costumes, and even conversations about subtitles. With so many passionate fans, the question on everyone’s mind is this: will there be a Squid Game season 2?
Squid Game is now the most popular show on Netflix…ever. By a long shot. Having reached over 111 million viewers in its first 28 days on the platform, it smashed Bridgerton’s previous record by a figure of nearly 30 million. Squid Game season 2 is in high demand, and viewers can’t get enough. But will there be one? Or will it simply be a one-season run?
What is Squid Game?
Squid Game is a South Korean show that follows a group of 456 contestants as they compete in a series of deadly children’s games (including an infamous Red Light, Green Light match).
Though the premise is intriguing, it’s the characters that set this series apart. There’s Seong Gi-hun, our flawed but sympathetic main character, and complicated Cho Sang-woo, a brilliant man who got himself into a bad situation. There’s also lovable Ali Abdul and fiery Kang Sae-byeok, both of whom have become fan favorites.
Although none of the characters are perfect, they’re all struggling and three-dimensional. The show makes us feel for them, breaking our hearts as the game’s body count gets higher and higher and the situations get more intense.
Squid Game cast
The Squid Game cast includes star Lee Jung-jae, known for his performances in many South Korean films, and Park Hae-soo, an award-winning musical theater actor. He also appears in the Korean adaptation of Money Heist. HoYeon Jung is one of the series’ breakout stars, having a lengthy modeling resume but no previous acting roles. Though he’s had some acting experience, Anupam Tripathi is another relative newcomer to the screen as well.
What happened in the Squid Game ending?
Squid Game ended on a cliffhanger of sorts when (spoiler!) game-winner and sole survivor Seong Gi-hun decided not to get on a plane to Los Angeles and instead hunt down the people running the game. (Oh, and there was also the twist where we learned one of them was Oh Il-nam, aka the Old Man before he died. What a finale!)
Will there be a Squid Game season 2?
Though there are no current plans for a Squid Game season 2, never say never! Writer/director Hwang Dong-hyuk is not ruling it out. He told Variety that he is open to it if he can find a compelling arc—but that he would employ a writers’ room to help him this time around.
An interview he gave with the Hollywood Reporter also mentioned he might like to explore further the dynamic introduced in season 1 about the Front Man and his police officer brother, and the mysterious figure who plays ddakji with Gi-hun initially gives him the business card.
