Only Murders in the Building Season 1 finale recap: Open and Shut

In the previous episode of Only Murders in the Building, the trio finds out that Tim has one of Jan’s bassoon cleaners in his apartment. Is Jan involved? Will the trio finally be able to solve the case?

This episode begins with Tim Kono talking. We are learning more about him and seeing the night progress from his point of view. He gets into an elevator with Jan, and we see that they are in a relationship. At the present time, Mabel and Oliver are rushing to find Charles because they think he could be in danger.

Only Murders in the Building Season 1 finale: How will Charles take the news?

As Mabel and Oliver try to break into Charles’ apartment, he gets off the elevator. Oliver shouts out that he is in a relationship with a murderer. They go into Charles’ apartment and show him the evidence. They also tell him about Jan and Tim’s relationship.

Charles doesn’t believe them because her phone number was not in Tim’s phone. He doesn’t want them to ruin his relationship. So, Mabel and Oliver leave still wanting more answers. They decide to go into Jan’s apartment because she is not home.

In his apartment, Charles finds the note that Jan left for him to ask him out. Jan knocks on the door. She is apologizing for lying to him about being “first chair” in the orchestra. He invites her in.

Jan sees the bassoon cleaner in Charles’ apartment and asks about it. She has no idea why it was at Tim’s. Charles says that he doesn’t believe she was involved. But he does tell her that Mabel and Oliver think that she is.

Meanwhile, Oliver and Mabel get into Jan’s apartment. Charles is talking to Jan and starts to accuse her of killing Tim. He tells her that he isn’t drinking his drink because he thinks that it is poisoned.

Oliver and Mabel find a lot of prescription drugs in her apartment. Jan has had some drinks and spills everything to Charles. Charles starts to feel the effects of the drugs. But how? She used the handkerchief she gave him to drug him, not the drink.

Oliver and Mabel find the knife she stabbed herself with. Charles collapses to the floor. Jan continues to tell Charles why she killed Tim. She found the emerald ring in Tim’s apartment and thought it was for another woman.

Only Murders in the Building Season 1 finale: Will Jan kill Charles?

Mabel finds the emerald ring in Jan’s apartment. Oliver and Mabel race back to Charles. Jan is planning on leaving him there to die. Jan leaves and Charles finds the strength to get to his phone, but he can’t get it to work.

Charles gets out of the apartment and is trying to get into the elevator. His door closes as Mabel and Oliver get out of theirs. They all finally meet up. Mabel and Oliver realize that Charles has been poisoned. They also piece together that Jan is planning on hurting the building with gas.

Oliver and Mabel start looking around the basement to fix the gas leak. After they fix it, Jan shows up with a gun. She is pointing it at Oliver. Charles gets enough strength to stand up, but that was just in his imagination. They distract Jan enough for Mabel to punch her.

Jan is arrested. Charles is put in an ambulance. Bunny tells Mabel and Oliver that because they solved the case, they get to stay. Oliver’s son stops by and offers Oliver a check. He doesn’t want it. Mabel is with Oscar. She is putting the finishing touches on her painting. Charles gets up enough courage to text Lucy.

We see the trio recording their last podcast episode. They go to the rooftop to celebrate. Mabel mentions that she still feels like there are loose ends. When they run out of champagne, Mabel goes to her apartment to get some. Oliver and Charles start to talk about their next adventure when sirens start to roar. Someone texts Charles and Oliver to get out of the building. They rush to get Mabel.

When they walk in, they see Bunny on the ground, murdered. When the cops bust in, they are all in the room with their hands up. The trio is being arrested for Bunny’s death. But if they didn’t do it, who did? I guess we will have to wait until Only Murders in the Building Season 2.
