The following article contains SPOILERS for the Supergirl series finale

Throughout this two-hour end, the Super Friends have a final battle with Lex and Nyxly before getting some closure in the Supergirl series finale.

Check out our recap of last week’s episode here!

The Supergirl series finale starts off strong with the Super Friends crafting a plan to get Esme back into her mother’s arms from the dastard Lex Luthor and Nyxly. Each member of the heroic group tries to add their skills and abilities to the plan, while Kara has to reassure Alex that her daughter will be back. While standing over William’s lifeless body, J’onn and Kara explain how they are both on the same page — they will do anything to get Esme back from the villains, no matter the cost.

At Lex’s hideout, Nyxly struggles to enter the Love Totem’s gauntlet, and she thinks it is because Esme does not trust the Imp princess. Nyxly and Lex try and decide how they will go about retrieving it, with Lex saying this was Nyxly’s fatal downfall in his original timeline. This leads to Nyxly trying to get closer to Esme while keeping Lex’s plan of much less compassion in the back of her head. Time is running out, however, since whenever Nyxly tries to enter the gauntlet, the rose petals fall away, meaning the totem will change hosts soon.

Supergirl series finale: Doubts cross Nyxly’s mind

After some time away, the matriarch of the Luthor household returns with Lillian Luthor. She questions her son’s feelings for an alien, but that does not change the mind of Lex, who is clearly head over heels for Nyxly. This conversation has a lot of race and xenophobic themes, which is weird because it has audiences siding with Lex for his tolerance. Nyxly and Lillian eventually meet for the first time and get a gauge for one another, with Lex being the main topic. The Luthor matriarch warns the Imp princess that her son is a sociopath and is unable to love anyone else.

Continuing the conversation from the last episode, Lena catches Andrea sneaking into The Tower to see the scene of William’s murder. After Andrea again calls herself a monster, especially after William dies because of something she did, Lena gives in and agrees with her. But the adoptive Luthor daughter also admits that she felt the way Andrea does right now after making impulsive and destructive relationships. Lena informs Andrea that she can either continue to live a life as a monster or she can pivot and atone for her wrongdoings.

Within The Tower, Alex and Kelly are getting ready for their team’s plan while trying to stay strong for their daughter. Their support system is unmatched and proves Esme’s moms are strong and love one another. Speaking of which, Nia and Brainy enter the Dream Realm so they can find some answers about the last Destiny Totem, and they find out Esme is safe right now. Supergirl is able to find the Destiny Totem, and when she passes the gauntlet, Alex takes it so she can give it to Lex and get back her daughter. The backup plan means Kara taking in the sun’s direct energy but leaving the central star weakened for the rest of the world. Lena and Kara differ on this plan since Kara wants to go through with it, but the damage to the world is too much.

Supergirl series finale: The exchange to save Esme

Back at the villain’s hideout, Lex tries to go behind Nyxly’s back to use his technology to get the Love Totem out of Esme. Nyxly is upset about this because of her care and love for the innocent Esme. So when Nyxly catches Lex trying to be sneaky and protects Esme, the Love Totem arrives in Nyxly’s hand, and she learns the true person Lex is right, putting an end to their villainous relationship.

Sentinel, Guardian, Dreamer, and Lena Luthor all arrive at the meeting spot, where they hope to get back Esme. Nyxly arrives as well, and a hand-off is made. This means the All-Stone begins to form when Lex and Lillian arrive and destroy the bridge. At this very moment, Supergirl is retrieving the energy of the sun, and her powers are being supercharged. She hears pleas from the people to stop and tells Brainiac and Martian Manhunter to turn off the device. The three then agree to go and help the rest of the heroes get Esme back.

On the riverside, it is the Super Friends versus Lex Luthor, Lillian Luthor, and Nyxly. As they are fighting, the All-Stone begins to form, leading to the totems forming three larger pieces being held by Nyxly, Lex, and Supergirl. The antagonists take out Supergirl, and Nyxly is about to take out Lex when Lillian sacrifices herself to save her son. Lena holds her adoptive mother while she is severely injured. Nyxly and Lex escape the riverside and fight through National City while they absorb the totem’s elements from Earth.

Supergirl series finale: Stopping Lex and Nyxly

In The Tower, after scanning the city and seeing the citizens inspire themselves, Kara knows what she has to do to stop Lex and Nyxly. After Lena gets some closure with Lillian before she dies, Kara explains that she assumed her mission was to be a hero to the people and save them, but it should have been to empower them. Brainy plans to use his Legion crown with Lena’s magic to work on empowering the people and preventing them from staying monochromatic.

After the plan works, the heroes approach the now weakened villains to try and stop them. Nyxly and Lex bring some goons in so they can even the numbers, like Earth X/Nazi Supergirl and fifth-dimensional monsters. However, because of Supergirl’s speech, the heroes have some backup, too. Mon-El, Winn Schott, Jimmy Olsen, Eliza Danvers, Andrea Rojas, and countless National City citizens all arrive and help the Super Friends. Lex tries to use the Phantom Zones and the phantoms to succeed, but since the creatures feed on fear, they take Lex and Nyxly into the Phantom Zone, making it look like the war is over.

Supergirl series finale: Services for Love

The heroes mourn over William at his funeral service. J’onn and Alex inform the group that they were given the opportunity to remake the DEO in their own way. Kara suggests they do it so they can be a force for good and so they can not only be heroes but also friends to the people of the world. Mon-El, Winn, and Brainy all go back to the future — but not before Brainy and Nia have their final goodbye where they express their love for one another.

A few weeks later, Kara is putting together flower arrangements for Kelly and Alex’s wedding when she receives a call from Cat Grant herself. Kara’s former boss informs Kara that she bought Catco back and is putting Kara Danvers in charge as editor-in-chief. This leaves Kara dumbfounded as she talks with Alex about it. Kara is worried that her time will be split between Supergirl and journalist responsibilities, so she does not have an answer yet.

The day of Kelly and Alex’s wedding finally arrives. Before the service, the brides spend some precious time with their respective families with some early tears before anyone walks down an aisle. Also, Nia receives a happy surprise when Brainy comes back and says his love for her is more important than serving the greater good — something he has done for the majority of his life. Kara and Winn beautifully sing “We Belong” by Pat Benatar as Alex is escorted by J’onn, while Kelly is escorted by Jimmy.

Supergirl series finale: New beginnings before the end

Following the service, Kara, Jimmy, and Winn reminisce about how they were the original Super Friends before Kara receives a call from Cat once again. The media mogul states that she knew Kara’s secret of being Supergirl all this time and expresses that her former employee could do wonderful things if she took her own advice from that speech she gave and empowered herself to do great things. Cat says Kara could do this if she stops dividing herself and becomes one powerful entity.

After a conversation with Lena, Kara takes off her glasses for the last time, embracing her true self with the best part of both of her. The show ends in the only way Supergirl can, with a game night turning overly competitive while the Super Friends are eating take-out. In the screens around National City, however, we see Cat Grant having a conversation with Kara Danvers and introducing the editor-in-chief as her true self: Supergirl.
