“The Friendly Type” might be a clue for a possible third personality for our hero. This is quite fitting as this is also Moon Knight’s third episode of the series.

With Marc Spector in control, Steven Grant can only watch as they try to find Ammit’s tomb before Arthur Harrow. The lengths to which they succeed may come to be a great cost for the Egyptian god of the moon.

Moon Knight Season 1 Episode 3 recap – Third Personality

The episode opens with Layla, speaking to a woman she had known her entire life while a fake ID is being created. While their natural conversation provides a lot of exposition, including Layla’s father was an archaeologist and that Egypt is Layla’s home, we also gather something terrible happened to her father.

We then jump to Arthur Harrow and his team arriving to the spot where Ammit’s tomb is buried. They are unfortunately aware of Marc Spector’s arrival.

Marc chases a person of interest about Harrow’s dig site, but he is killed by three men. Marc easily handles all three of them until Steven prevents him from killing one and thus Marc loses consciousness.

When he awakens, he’s in the back of a cab heading for the airport and having no idea how he got there. He spots the men he recently fought with and chases them down.

When he does he loses consciousness again, reawakening to find two are dead with the third trying to escape.

Khonshu believes he will talk but the young man kills himself in the name of Harrow’s cult. Both Marc and Steven have no idea what happened and neither take accountability for all of the violence.

This is but the first time we think there could be a third personality that Marc and Steven aren’t aware of. This third personality seems to reveal himself during very intense fight scenes with a deepened almost cruel sounding voice.

Marc and Steven can’t dwell on this for long as Khonshu believes they might be able to get help from the gods. After creating an eclipse, the gods decide to meet inside one of the pyramids of Giza.

Marc discovers that Khonshu is not very popular amongst the other Egyptian gods. Upon entering the pyramid, he meets the other human avatars of Egyptian gods Hathor, Osiris, Horus, Isis and Defnut.

The Egyptian gods do not interfere with the world of humans but they try to pass on their skills and abilities in times of need through their avatars. Marc meets Hathor’s kind human avatar who seems to have a soft spot for Khonshu but the other gods are not going to allow him to slip up again.

Khonshu tries to warn the Egyptian gods about Arthur Harrow’s harmful actions but they do not believe him. They even call upon Harrow himself and of course he easily fools them.

Harrow turns the tables on Khonshu revealing how his avatar is unwell, going by two different names. The Egyptians gods are not pleased by this and allow Harrow to go.

Hathor remains within her avatar and tells Marc that in order to find Ammit’s tomb he needs to find the tomb of the medjay Senfu. Marc doesn’t know where to find it, but Layla does.

They meet up and reminisce about their marriage which appeared to be a happy one until a certain point. Marc confesses that he didn’t want to tell her about Steven and any hopes the two might rekindle their love seem dismal.

A rather untrustworthy Anton Mogart has the tomb they seek. Layla and Marc pretend to be a married couple and observe the sarcophagus.

Using reflective glass, Steven tries to help Marc put together several pieces before they are caught. Harrow arrives and reveals the power of Ammit to Anton by using his cane.

He also hints that Marc knows what actually happened to Layla’s father. Marc becomes Moon Knight leaving nearly everyone dead in his wake.

Taking the pieces, Marc allows Steven to take over as he figures out that the pieces are a map guided by the stars. But the stars from thousands of years ago have since moved.

Knowing this will result in the gods turning him to stone, Khonshu and Steven work together to turn back time. The event can be seen all across Egypt as the night sky comes into view.

Layla is able to find the location of Ammit’s tomb just as Khonshu is turned to stone. He makes one last request that Marc finds a way to free him.

Steven passes out from the event while Harrow visits the pyramid of Giza to behold a stone statue of Khonshu. He is most pleased by this event and thanks the god for having made him into the person he is today.

Moon Knight Season 1 Episode 3 review

Shall we address the giant elephant in the room first? Wouldn’t the Egyptian gods know Arthur Harrow is seeking Ammit’s Tomb?

I mean, unless their powers have really become so poor due to the abandonment of people worshipping them…but even still. With that out of the way, I did find it interesting that multiple Egyptian gods have human avatars.

I’m still curious as to who they decide which human will be their avatar and how long do they stay with that human before moving onto the next one?

When Marc’s mission is over will Khonshu move on as well? What will become of Moon Knight now that Khonshu has been turned to stone?

When Marc awakes will it even be Marc or Steven or someone else entirely? We are halfway through the series, and I remain as enthralled and invested as I have since episode one!

Both Oscar Isaac and Ethan Hawke work so well with one another that I hope they’ll work on more future projects together!
