Considering the petition to remake season 8 of Game of Thrones is still popular today, it is safe to say HBO would be even larger fools to make those same mistakes again with the prequel series, House of the Dragon.

Taking portions from Martin’s 2018 Fire and Blood novel, House of the Dragon is set 200 years before the death of Jon Aryn and the events that followed in Westeros. This means the Westerosi landscape is vastly different, with the main change being the Targaryens are easily ruling over the realm.

Let’s take a look at the trailer released this weekend during San Diego Comic-Con 2022 and what fans can expect from this series.

House of the Dragon season 1 Premise

In a similar style to the original Game of Thrones series, House of the Dragon looks at the succession for the Iron Throne and who will rule over Westeros. While the original series looked at a country-wide war to determine who will sit on the metal chair of swords, House of the Dragon season 1 looks to have a more intimate and reserved scope.

With this narrowed lens, House of the Dragon season 1 looks at the power grab that will come from King Viserys I stepping down with two people who have a claim to the throne. This leads to an eventual war of succession known as the seminal “Dance of the Dragons” and the downfall of the Targaryen empire.

House of the Dragon season 1 cast

Playing the role of the aging King Viserys I will be Paddy Considine. This platinum-haired king is regarded as a warm and gentle king, beloved by his people. One of the folks who claim to be his heir is his brother, Prince Daemon, who will be played by Matt Smith.

Daemon is a skilled fighter and dragonrider, making him the assumptive heir. These assumptions are put into doubt when the king’s daughter, Princess Rhaenyra, begins making a claim to her father’s throne.

Emma D’Arcy will play the princess who is mentally formidable and is a dragonrider just like her uncle.

Steve Toussaint will be Lord Corlys Velaryon, known as the Sea Snake due to him being the most famous seafarer in the realm. His wife is Princess Rhaenys Velaryon who is also a dragonrider but was passed over to be the ruler of Westeros for her cousin Viserys.

Then there is Ser Criston Cole who is brilliant with a sword and a steward to a high lord. Making up the rest of the cast is Olivia Cooke as Lady Alicent Hightower, the daughter of the Hand who has a reputation of being one of the most beautiful folks in the Seven Kingdoms.

The Hand of the King is Ser Otto Hightower, who will be played by Rhys Ifans and also Prince Daemon’s political rival.
