Walkers or zombies have been a very present danger in The Walking Dead since the beginning. Like zombies in our horror culture today, their only desire is to feast on the living as they move about their decaying bodies slowly or quickly, groaning and growling.

The Walking Dead added the twist of walkers becoming the fate of everyone, as even when you die, you turn. There has yet to be a definitive reason why this has happened.

There is no cure. No one has proven to be immune after being bitten or dying.

For today’s topic, we wanted to explore a question that has weighed on our minds for a while. Will walkers always exist in The Walking Dead Universe?

Will walkers eventually become extinct in The Walking Dead Universe?

The short and obvious answer is yes, but we’re not entirely convinced. After watching the most recent episode of Tales of The Walking Dead, we thought about the possibility of walkers simply starving to death.

You would think that if they wander around enough with no food to eat, wouldn’t they just deteriorate and decompose? We’ve seen walkers literally unable to move, due to a variety of reasons.

We’re thinking if society is able to keep walkers to specific areas, away from food sources, they can probably starve to death. We wouldn’t have to waste resources on killing them, like weapons or people brave enough to get close enough with a knife.

Much like The Walking Dead: World Beyond, preventive measures can be taken so that when someone does eventually pass away, they won’t escape to kill others. That was something many shows in TWDU learned the hard way.

It did seem as though the Dead Sector mentioned in Tales of The Walking Dead is purposely meant for walkers to roam freely away from humans. People will eventually die, as we can’t live forever, but we can at least stop large hordes of walkers from forming.

It is the large hordes that can destroy smaller communities and civilizations. If we can manage that, and somehow figure out how to become immune from bites and turning, then walkers will become a thing of the past.

We’d like to think the currently unnamed Daryl Dixon spinoff will provide further information and insight into that possibility. The Walking Dead returns for the last time October 2 on AMC.
