Derry Girls season 3 is officially on Netflix! The final season begins with copious amounts of hilarity (as if we’d expect anything less) jumping between Erin and her friends getting involved in a robbery and Erin’s family dealing with a cat named Seamus.

Derry Girls Season 3 Episode 1 recap – Pass or Fail?

Summer vacation is nearly over. Erin, Michelle, Clare, Orla, and James had spent a large amount of time creating a video they hoped would be worthy of some kind of award.

As they debate whether the movie is good or not, the ever-worried Clare reminds her friends what will happen the next day. They will receive their GCSE results which will determine if they passed or failed.

The group doesn’t seem to worry, carrying on with their evening by visiting a video rental store. There they meet, Sister Michael who obviously knows if the group passed or failed.

Instead of telling them, she gives them a rather vague statement causing the group to panic.  Michelle has the brilliant idea to break into the school, Our Lady Immaculate College, to see for themselves that evening if they passed or failed.

Derry Girls Season 3 Episode 1 recap – Seamus the Cat

While the group worries and plans the break in, back home Erin’s parents are worried about Grandpa Joe’s cat, Seamus. It seems the cat has been leaving dead animals at the home for some time, causing Gerry in particular to go mad.

As usual, Grandpa Joe ignores Gerry’s concerns about the dead animals until the arrival of a dead white rabbit named Fluffy. Grandpa Joe refuses to believe Seamus is the culprit claiming there is another cat in the area.

Regardless, both he and Gerry decide to hide the evidence. The two drive out into the middle of nowhere and bury the white rabbit.

Their problems seem to be solved until the gentlemen return home to find their neighbor and granddaughter. The two are trying to find Fluffy and automatically accuse Seamus.

Grandpa Joe remains steadfast but is now aware that the neighbor will be watching them.

Derry Girls Season 3 Episode 1 recap – The Robbery

When the group arrives to the school that evening, they encounter two, unfamiliar men. Afraid that these are men who can rat them out for breaking in, they agree to help them.

What they don’t realize until it is too late is that they just aided in robbing the school of new equipment. The police arrive soon after and we are treated to the scene we saw months ago when famous and talented actor Liam Neeson arrives to question the group.

After continuous back and forth questioning, the group realizes they have the upper hand. That is until Neeson’s character reveals that they need an adult to come pick them up.

Who can they call? Why Erin’s Uncle Colm.

He, of course, saves the day, wearing Neeson and his coworker down. They do receive images from security cameras of the two men who actually robbed the school and let the group go.

The following day, the group learns that they all passed. Sister Michael admits she knew but thought it’d be funny to not reveal anything.

Neeson’s coworker arrives to reveal a video camera (that belongs to James) was left behind to which the group realizes they may not be out of the woods just yet.

Derry Girls Season 3 Episode 1 review

It really is a shame to know that this is the final season of Derry Girls. I am quite honestly going to miss watching these characters as they grow up and find themselves in the craziest situations.

I find myself struggling to think of new ways to say how funny this show is! If you are worried about the heavy Irish accents, closed captioning will help.

“The Night Before” really sets up how unpredictable the rest of the season will become. This is the final year of high school for our main characters, which means we expect as many heartfelt and hilarious moments as possible.

Already, Derry Girls season 3 episode 1 keeps the funny train going, never once losing their comedic touch. This isn’t always the case.

Sometimes television shows can lose their luster from season to season. It could be due to new writers, new actors or just the simple fact that they run out of ideas.

I’m glad to see that Derry Girls has not and most likely will not fall into that category. I am curious if the Seamus cat subplot will come back around later in the season.
