Oddballs Season 1 Episode 9 recap: Grandma’s Boy

James is tired of receiving the same gift from his grandma whom he never met. In Oddballs season 1 episode 9 “Grandma’s Boy” he finally meets his grandma and the two spend the day together.

James and Max try to play a very competitive, intense, video game involving dressing dolls when James’ dad interferes with a very loud vacuum. James notices a special button on the vacuum and presses it.

The long cord retracts and finally moves his dad out of the way of the television screen. A package arrives soon after for James from his grandma, but he has no interest in opening it.

It is revealed to be a stick and hoop toy that instantly bores Max. James confesses that he never met his grandma and feels upset that she doesn’t even know him.

He and Max decide to finally go meet her using the address from the package. They arrive and find a 3D printer called G.R.A.N.D.M.A.

Turns out, the gift she keeps making every year is what James’ parents tell her to. Instead of James getting upset that his parents don’t have the 3D printer make him something he likes, he decides to spend the day with her so she can get to know him better.

Pushing G.R.A.N.D.M.A around with her very long extension cord, the two enjoy a day at the park, flying kites, fishing and going to the movies. The two seem to have a lot in common, especially when it comes to dealing with Stuart the bully and a rude park goer blasting music.

Alas their fun comes to a halt when they try to enjoy ice cream. Apparently after a third ice cream the treat costs money.

Fearing James and his G.R.A.N.D.M.A won’t pay, Roxanne, the rock police officer arrives. James and G.R.A.N.D.M.A try to escape but find themselves in trouble when the extension cord comes to a stop.

Remembering how he solved a problem earlier in the episode, James presses the button which retracts the cord. The two fly through the city and all the way back to the office where Max has apparently been residing all day.

Back at the office, G.R.A.N.D.M.A figures out what the perfect gift for James would be. She creates a miniature statue of James and all the fun things they did that day together.

James loves it and is happy to know that he has a bond with his G.R.A.N.D.M.A.

Oddballs Season 1 Episode 9 review

Yet again, James have provided a good dose of humor with something very sentimental. Initially I feared something was going to happen to G.R.A.N.D.M.A.

Much like Toasty from the first episode of the season, I was worried James was going to have to pull her plug or turn her off when Roxanne closed in on the two. Thankfully that was not the case.

The bond the two of them create is so wholesome. These are the kinds of bonds every kid wants to make with their grandparents.

You’d think with G.R.A.N.D.M.A being a 3D printer she’d have trouble doing much of anything with James. But that doesn’t stop her.

They are able to have fun and get to know each other reminding us that we can all do the same with our grandparents, no matter the situation. If Oddballs is greenlit for a season 2, I hope to see more episodes like this one.

It’s a nice change up from the usual oddity and absurdity of the show.
