The Walking Dead: The best Carol and Daryl moments
By Shay McBryde
As The Walking Dead came to a close last night, we took a look back at the only two original characters left of the series and the place they have put on our hearts. The two lost souls who shared similar traumatic backgrounds and became each other’s best friend, safe place, soulmate, life partner, and so many other things.
They became a dynamic duo so beautifully and magically written that it will forever hold a high place in television history, never to be matched again. I took to Twitter and asked fans about their favorite Carol and Daryl moments, as well as a few others through the years.
This is what they had to say. How it all began.
Carol taking the axe from Daryl to do the job on Ed herself. We saw so many deeply hidden emotions Carol had been holding in for so long.
She was able to let it loose in this scene, something her character desperately needed.

Carol has been a leader, a hero, a lone wolf, and many things in between. But her true self is always being with Daryl.
We never see the Queen smile as much about the possibility of a future with Daryl.
Daryl Dixon does not express himself very often. So, in this episode, for him to say, look woman you are coming home with me or I’m going to take matters into my own hands, was very big for him.
This was a very intimate scene between of the two of them. Rare moments alone where we just see the connection between the two of them.
We deserved much of that season 11.
The Cherokee Rose episode gave the biggest insight into Daryl Dixons heart. It’s something no one expected so early on from the character.
The gentle way he gave her the rose and recited the story of the Trail of Tears was beautiful and moving. To this day he’s never given anyone else a flower.
This scene was also a beautifully intimate moment between the two. Though Daryl was angry having to lead Negan’s men at the time, he accepts the comfort and smiles.
Carol also tells him Ezekiel has proposed to her. You can see clear jealousy and sadness in him to have to lose her.
But he puts his feelings aside and wants her to be happy no matter what. She deserves it more than anyone.
This depicted the level Daryl will go to stand in the way of anyone who tries to hurt Carol. We’ve never seen a moment like this from him and sadly we may never again.
Even if so much as a Mother Nature interferes, the man is dead. Luckily Morgan took care of that pesky problem.
This one felt like a lifetime ago but way Carol says, “I can’t lose you too,” struck a cord right through our hearts. She lost the one person who meant the most to her.
Losing Daryl too would have meant losing everything. That still remai s true to this day.
This is one of my personal, all time favorites as well. Carol brings Daryl some food after he is healing from his injuries.
Carol sees the real Daryl from the start meanwhile it takes others a little while to catch on. The way she says, “You are every bit as good as them, every bit,” is something he needed to know.
He is just as good of a man as they are, even better than most of them.
This is a moment that wasn’t scripted, as Norman Reedus had put in. Carol helps Daryl up and they share a loving glance at the end.
Every scene between these two always has a significant meaning.
These two episodes shared a wonderful parallel. Back in season 1, many forgot Carol shared that she was claustrophobic.
She didn’t even know Daryl had heard her. Cut to season 10, we see Daryl saying it out loud.
Carol never remembered telling him which he responds by, “If I only knew what you told me, I wouldn’t know shit.” It gives a glimpse on how observant he is.
The biggest heartbreaking moment of the series for me was Carol holding Daryl back as she screams out for Sophia, now a tiny walker. It was such an amazing scene, beautifully performed by Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride.
They spent an entire season looking for her little girl to have it end in such a traumatic way. Breaks our hearts every time we see it.
The meaning of Carol’s dream was never fully explained by the showrunner. However, watching season 11 clearly shows that Daryl is her happy place.
Just having breakfast and taking some money to go to the store for jam. Simple, pleasant.
The girl just wants a simple life with her soulmate.
Carol wants Alpha dead more than anything. She’s going to avenge her son’s death.
Daryl tries to level with her and tell her we don’t fight for revenge. We have a future don’t let her take that too.
There was such softness in his eyes as he spoke from the heart in an almost begging tone.

It’s evident to see on screen that it breaks Daryl in two that Carol isn’t confiding in him. The way he always does with her.
He doesn’t understand that it is her nature to protect him. She doesn’t care about getting herself killed to kill Alpha and save everyone else.
The cause of why she doesn’t tell him things is that. She won’t let him get hurt in the process.
Here is the reunion hug after Daryl had been separated from Carol ever since she left Alexandria. Neither of them truly knew what the other had gone through.
Though, they don’t need to say words as they often don’t. They only need each other in the moment.
Directly following Carol getting off the boat months after being at sea, Daryl couldn’t wait to pick her up in his arms and whisk her away.

The reunion scene between Daryl and Carol after she blew up Terminus to save everybody. This scene is probably the most well-known of the show.
The embrace between these two shows so much love, and agony about being away from each other. It lasted so long and to be honest we all needed it.
The best part about Season 11 has been the co-parenting of Daryl and Carol with Judith and RJ. For a long while, Daryl was trying to do it on his own.
But he leans on Carol this season. She gives advice and helps with their questions and concerns, the way only a mother can.
There are even more great moments between them I could have added. Season 11 really fell short for that with too big of a cast.
We’ve had some great powerful moments between them. But for them to be the final, original characters left standing, we were owed much more.
Especially for those fans who have been with us from the start. How did you feel about the ending of the show?
This will not be the end for two of the most iconic characters of the show. They will always hold their mark in history for the most unique relationship of all time.
No matter if you see them as just friends or in love, they hold one of the deepest relationships on television. That will never be forgotten.
