James Gunn’s new DC plan includes five all-new TV Shows
James Gunn has announced five all-new DC TV shows as part of his plans for the reboot of the DC Extended Universe. The best part?
Before, DC TV shows usually did their own thing and didn’t really coincide with what was going on in the cinematic universe. Arrowverse was a whole other thing, leaving fans frustrated at the lack of cohesion.
Now, James Gunn has set a clear-cut marker of how his plan for DC will be different. Unlike the previous iterations, he has divided the DC Universe into two parts.
Peter Safran explains, “The DCU’s a multiverse, but we’re going to be focusing on one universe from that multiverse. And if something isn’t DCU, we’re going to make that very clear,”.
That means movies like The Joker by Todd Phillips, or even The Batman by Matt Reeves will belong to the DC Elseworlds.
While the DCU will consist of shows and movies which are interconnected and geared towards telling a specific story. Gunn and Safran announced their plans for five movies and five HBO Max TV series, all of which will be interconnected.
While the idea of new movies are definitely exciting; Superman: Legacy, The Authority, The Brave and the Bold, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and Swamp Thing, it is the TV shows that will be the exact thing fans have been waiting for.
This slate of releases are under the name: Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters
What are the five DC TV shows that Gunn has announced?
1. Creature Commandos (Animated DC TV shows):
The first one on this list is an animated HBO Max series. The series will be tied directly into the live-action stories that the studio will also be telling.
It will feature characters like Rick Flag Sr. (who is expected to be a part of other live-action projects), Dr. Phosphorus, Frankenstein, The Bride of Frankenstein, GI Robot, and Weasel. While fans may not know some of these characters, Gunn is known for his storytelling and will be sure to introduce them to everyone soon.
2. Waller (Live Action DC TV Shows):
Viola Davis will be returning as her character, Amanda Waller in a new HBO Max series. This is seen as a follow-up to Peacemaker and will feature parts of the Peacemaker team as regulars on the show.
This seems like an exciting continuation of a story that DC managed to tell well. With Christal Henry, a writer on Watchmen, and Jeremy Carver, the creator of Doom Patrol on the show, it seems like a promising project.
3. Booster Gold (Live Action DC TV Shows):
Yet another fan-favorite character among comic lovers, Booster Gold is a hero from the future who has impostor syndrome. He uses future technology to be loved by the people of this universe and the story is in development currently.
Given the lack of representation Booster Gold has received on screen and the many storylines he could be involved in, the possibilities are endless.
4. Lanterns (Live Action DC TV Shows)
While the last three are all excellent shows, this is where it gets extremely exciting! Ever since the rather abominable showing of Green Lantern, the live-action movie where Ryan Reynolds portrayed the character, DC has steered clear.
The character was not even a part of The Justice League. However, with the reintroduction of the Lanterns in the DCU, Gunn is making his intent clear – to bring back some of the most interesting characters in the DCU and put them on screen.
Also, if the name was not a dead giveaway, Lanterns will feature two Green Lanterns, not just one. Hal Jordan and John Stewart will be teaming up in a terrestrial-based mystery, in what Safran called a “True Detective” type show.
This promises to be an extremely interesting new show.
5. Paradise Lost (Live action DC TV shows)
Finally, in what promises to be the most exciting TV show that’s been planned so far, Safran has described this story about Themyscira, aka the birthplace of Wonder Woman, as a Game of Thrones-type story. This will be the origin story of Paradise Island and how a society of the women came to be, what their rules are, and every other question that the DC fanverse has had about the mysterious origins of Wonder Woman.
These all take place long before she was even born. DC has been really lacking when it comes to competing with the juggernaut that Marvel has become.
While this latest plan does not make their Cinematic Universes equal by any means, it could be the promise of something new and exciting.
