Netflix renews That ’90s Show for a second season
By Joel Leonard
It looks like That ’90s Show has overcome one of the biggest hurdles that Netflix Originals seem to face these days. It’s getting renewed for a second season.
That ’90s Show, which debuted on Netflix on Jan. 19, has quickly risen in popularity for the streaming service, quickly reaching number five on Netflix’s most viewed list. So it’s not a surprise that Netflix is bringing the show back for a second season, but it probably comes as a relief to fans of the show to know that there will be future episodes.
What we know about That ’90s Show season 2 so far
While we don’t know much about the upcoming second season given that it was just announced, there were a few bits of information that fans of the series will get excited about. First of all, the second season will be bigger than the first. While season one of the show consisted of ten episodes, the episode order for the second season is sixteen. Clearly, Netflix is pleased with the response that they’ve seen for the show to expand the episode count moving forward.
It’s also worth noting that the events of the second season are expected to take place a year after the events of the first season. Remember, That ’90s Show follows Leia, the daughter of Eric and Donna, staying at her grandparents’ house for the summer. Presumably, Leia will return to living with her parents during the school year and will return to Point Place, Wisconsin the following summer for the events of season two.
Given the first season took place in the year 1995, then the second season will likely take place in 1996. Of course, that’s just a guess right now. The original series started in 1976 but fudged the timeline of the series in certain places to make sure it didn’t reach 1980 before the end of the show. If That ’90s Show continues to be a big hit for Netflix, it may have to end up doing the same to make sure that it doesn’t run out of 1990s summer vacations.
That ’90s Show joins Netflix’s other recent breakout hit Wednesday in getting an increasingly rare early second-season renewal from the streaming service.
