Netflix is bringing back Wednesday for season 2, much to the pleasure of fans. The 8-episode first season was extremely popular, as the series set the platform record for most hours viewed for an English language series in its first week.

In a video posted to Twitter, fans of Wednesday finally learned that the show had been renewed for another season. In the video Jenna Ortega, while in character, also acknowledged that millions of people on the internet had mimicked her dance, saying it was pure torture.

The tweet promised more torture was coming.

For the moment, there has been no update about what the second season will bring.

So, what happened in Season 1 of Wednesday?

In season 1, Ortega debuted the character, who soon joins Nevermore Academy – the very institution where her parents had studied. Unfortunately, or rather, fortunately for her, things are not simply the normal level of out-of-the-ordinary that one might expect from a school of “outcast” students.

Instead, locals are being killed in the woods by a beast. Through her incessant investigations into the incidents, Wednesday comes across some life-or-death situations, solves a decades-old mystery surrounding her father being an accused murderer, saves everyone from a deranged resurrected historical figure with discriminatory tendencies, and finally, puts an end to the terror of the beast.

And she does all of this while attending classes, taking part in co-curricular activities, possibly falling in love, and (the horror) making friends.

What we know about Wednesday Season 2 so far: Cast, release date speculation, & more

The star-studded cast is expected to return almost entirely for the next season. Ortega will be reprising her role, and Catherine Zeta-Jones is expected to return as Morticia Addams.

Even Gwendoline Christie might return, though that would require a good explanation, as she appeared to have passed away at the end of the first season. Production on the second season will likely begin soon, but fans might have to wait sometime before season 2’s release.

As for what fans can expect from the next season, it appears that the showrunners have big plans for developing the relationship between Wednesday and her mother, Morticia Addams.  Co-showrunner Miles Millar talked to TVLine about what to expect in the next season.

"“We felt like we just touched the surface with those characters and the actors are so amazing in those roles.…Catherine [Zeta-Jones] is, I think, an iconic Morticia. The relationship between Wednesday and Morticia is also essential to the show, and the idea that Wednesday is trying to forge her own path outside the family is important.”"

While it’s clear that the morbid young character might be continuing her journey of stepping out from her mother’s shadow, it remains to be seen what new horrors they are confronted with.
