Thronies, rejoice as there may be a new epic set in Westeros coming to screens in, well…not so soon. This time, it will be about the events during Aegon’s Conquest.

Later designated by historians as Aegon I, he was the first of the Valyrians to cross the sea from their dying homeland in Essos, after a series of volcanic cataclysms engulfed that land. With his sister-wives, Aegon set upon decimating the opposition of Westeros lords to install the Targaryen Dynasty we later come to know.

According to an exclusive report by Variety, from sources close to the production, “HBO is keen to move forward and get it into development. Sources also say that there may be a feature component to the project, i.e. HBO and Warner Bros. would produce a feature film that would then lead into the potential series, though plans remain in flux at present.”

What is the status of a possible Game of Thrones prequel spinoff about Aegon’s Conquest?

The story of Aegon and his subjugation of Westeros by dragon and a loyalist army, would set in motion the rise of the Targaryen Dynasty, which we see at the peak of power on the current spinoff House of the Dragon. The events in the canon series, Game of Thrones, meanwhile happens 300 years after Aegon’s Conquest.

All the world-building and series storylines are based on the series of books by fantasy author George R. R. Martin collectively known as, A Song of Ice and Fire. In the same Variety report, a search for a head writer is currently underway.

HBO’s hunt for scribes for this new series is a good sign of its eagerness to get the production ball rolling, into something legitimately marked for development, which could mean a movie.

A feature film that, depending on testing feedback and audience interest, will likely decide the fate of allocating a budget for a series further down the road. There have been plenty of rumors and earmarked storylines for development set in the Game of Thrones universe.

Oddly enough, the Long Night produced a pilot episode that starred Naomi Watts but was eventually scrapped and never aired.

If greenlighted into development, the story of Aegon’s Conquest will be a truly welcome addition to the world of Westeros. Though it’s far too early to tell when the second season of House of the Dragon will air, its release is already eagerly anticipated by fans.

Season 2 will reportedly be shorter than season 1, with just eight episodes.
