Love & Death Season 1 Episode 1 recap

The first episode starts on June 13th, 1980, with bloodstains in the Gore family’s bathroom. Then the show goes back in time to September 1978, when people from the Methodist Church in Lucas, Wylie, have lunch after a Sunday service.

Betty Gore talks with her husband Allan about an upcoming volleyball match, while Pat, Candy Montgomery’s husband, compliments her singing voice. After eating, Betty and Allan go to their house and have sex.

They are trying to have another baby. At the same time, Candy talks to Pastor Jackie, who tells her that she is getting divorced.

Candy tries to make Jackie feel better, but Betty and Allan are having trouble in their marriage because Betty can’t get pregnant. The following Sunday, the church members learn about Pastor Jackie’s divorce and then play a volleyball game.

Betty’s husband and Candy both play on the same team. During the game, Allan accidentally bumps into Candy and helps her up.

This interaction seems to change how they feel about each other. Meanwhile, Pat, Candy’s husband, congratulates Betty on her pregnancy even though she had not yet announced it, which makes things awkward.

Candy can’t stop thinking about Allan, even when she’s doing other things like watching movies or attending class. One night, after singing at church, she sees Allan getting into his car which parked next to hers.

She gets out of her car and tells him that she has feelings for him. Allan doesn’t say anything and they both leave.

Allan starts to think about Candy more and more during the day, while Betty becomes increasingly frustrated, which leads to more arguments with Allan. Pat and Candy’s marriage also seems to be having problems.

After another volleyball game, Allan asks to speak with Candy and they talk about the possibility of having an affair. However, they decide that it would be wrong to cheat on their spouses and choose to remain faithful.

On Halloween, Allan escorts Candy’s children home and talks with her briefly. The next day, Candy learns from Jackie that a new, younger pastor will be coming to the church and that she herself is taking a new job.

Jackie says that the new pastor will encourage younger couples to join the church. Allan and Candy talk on the phone and decide to meet for lunch.

They talk about the possibility of having an affair and decide to take time to think about it. During this time, they make a list of reasons for and against having an affair.

Eventually, they decide to meet at a motel outside of town on December 12th, 1978, to have sex. They set rules for themselves to make sure that they both understand that this is only physical and that they will end things if either of them starts to develop feelings.
