Peacock’s Crystal Lake episode 1 impressed me beyond measure. It was equal parts terrifying and emotionally devastating. They cracked Pam's grief wide open and crushed me to my core.

After all this time, I feel sorry for Pam and everything she experienced. Yes, her body count is now at two so far, but I'd argue that those men attacked her first and she was in self-defense mode. It was similar to how she instantly ran to Jason's distress call. She spun into attack and didn't second-guess herself until the aftermath surrounded her.

Episode 1 was only part one of a three-part story that dives headfirst into how Crystal Lake went from a sleepy small town to crime central. Pam's psyche becomes a wreck even more after the murders; she latches onto Grace with Jason gone. Although decades in age separate them, Pam and Grace both struggle with who they are from before Jason disappeared and after in these next two parts and moving forward.

In Pam’s nightmare, Levon tries to get her to bring her canoe back to the lake’s dock; instead, Pam looks down into the water. She reaches down, and she smiles at Jason reaching back out to her. A decaying grown man grabs her out of the canoe, sending her overboard, and the jolt wakes her up as the phone rings.

Nora whispers on the other end from a pay phone. She can't let anyone know that she knows Pam's location as Pam apologizes for dragging her into all of this. Nora does confirm that she doesn't think the men told anyone where they were going. No one has mentioned Pam's name in years. Despite mostly no one knowing, she's not safe because if those men found her, others will follow, Nora warns.

Pam stays busy while working as the school lunch lady. No matter what she does, everything reminds her of the two murders she committed. Then, Grace comes through the lunch line and pulls Pam out of her bad memories. Grace tries to give the bracelet Jason made her last summer at camp to Pam, but she declines, saying he made it for her. She should have something to remember him by. They get yelled at by the other students for holding up the land as Pam checks in on Grace and wonders if she's really okay.

Grace's high school experience

Sitting alone, Grace sees Barry touching Claudette fondly and flashes back to last summer when she saw them in the boathouse. Claudette catches her staring so she runs to the restroom to hide and sees all the awful things on the stall doors. A couple of girls come in and Grace overhears them talking about a high school party. Once they are gone, she applies the lipstick they left behind and mimes their conversation in the mirror.

Claudette and Barry arrive at Camp Crystal Lake (owned by Steve Christy's parents) to the high school party, and a little later Grace shows up to the party dressed years beyond her age.

Claudette goes into counsel mode and tries to sweetly tell Grace she looks ridiculous and to go home. Grace throws in her face what she saw last summer but that only makes things worse. Claudette turns into a mean girl and makes Grace cry.

Grace runs into the woods. Later on when Claudette and Barry are leaving, they're scared by something lurking in the wood. One of Grace's shoes that she left behind in the woods is thrown through the back window of Barry's car as they speed away.

Pam's weekend away

Pam brings Levon dessert at the police station and apologizes for the picnic and being short with him afterwards. He isn't bothered but she gives him the cupcakes anyway. It wouldn't be Pam if she wasn't curious about what's happening on his side of things being a cop and all.

Pam also tells Levon that she doesn't know what to do with Jason's things nor the memories that weren't made. She lies that she hasn't stepped into the woods in months. Overall, she appeals to his heart about her problems and he invites her to hang out with everyone at the bowling alley.

While she's getting beer for everyone, Rita approaches Pam, taking her out of her flashbacks of Benny's attack and murder. Rita commends her on ripping everyone a new one at the picnic and not holding back her emotions. They talk about how Pam and Levon are just friends while Rita hooked up with Deputy Dorf and he still has a crush. Rita shares that she lost a child in March 1951 and knows what Pam is going through losing Jason.

Through this conversation, Pam asks Rita where she goes out of town because she needs some time away. Turns out, Rita has an extra ticket to a seminar this weekend and invites Pam to join her. After their conversation, Pam stays the rest of the time until Levon walks her to her car and she thanks him for next giving up on her.

The seminar is anything but a good time. The speaker, known for being rough, challenges Pam to speak her mind. Then, he gets her to sing, surprising everyone.

After that first night, Rita bails on their girl's night to go out with a guy, and the seminar speaker invites Pam back to his room. They nearly jump sleep together until she bites him and he pushes her off. His rudeness makes her run out of the room. Since he's known for using pain against people, he uses her coming back to his room in front of everyone at the next pain reliever activity. It backfires on him.

The speaker tells all of the guests to get their feelings out, and they aren't happy. As Pam grabs a bowling ball to take him out, someone else wacks him with a bat and messes up half his face. She walks away relieved.

Crystal Lake isn't so sleepy

While Pam's away with Rita, a dog and two men discover the body parts of the dead bodies in the cave. From episode 1, we know those body parts belong to the two men who Pam killed and fed to the bear.

Levon is called out to check the body parts and solve the case. There's not much to go on. He tells Deputy Dorf to keep the man-eating bear case to himself so no one panics.

Brianna gets a scare of her life when she finds the body parts in Levon’s refrigerator the next morning. He says he brought it home because the EM’s closed early and didn't open again until Monday. After they fight, Brianna mentions that Levon might as well do his own exam on the body parts in his refrigerator.

Levon visits Ralph about the bear in the woods. Since Ralph knows the land better than anyone, Levon comes to him. Ralph tells him he didn't see anything and storms off. Later that night, not being able to get it off his mind, Levon examines the body parts and finds part of the scissors (from Pam).
