Ted Lasso fans got to return to Richmond this summer and fall in the fourth season of the hit Apple TV series. After a three-year break between seasons, Ted Lasso season 4 was a huge hit. Despite the show's success, there are still questions about the show's future.
Unfortunately, Jason Sudeikis, the series star and co-creator, didn't even have answers when asked about Ted Lasso season 5, but we know it's not what fans wanted to hear.
On the podcast Talk Easy with Sam Fragoso, Jason Sudeikis admitted there’s no immediate plan for future seasons of the show. He said that he’d “like” to do more seasons but that it “takes a village.”
Sudeikis even took it a step further and hinted a major wait will likely be in store. It's not what fans wanted to hear.
“I just don’t know," Sudeikis said. "We haven’t started a writers’ room or anything like that.”
Granted, Ted Lasso season 4 wasn’t part of the show's original concept for a long time. In fact, they planned to end Ted Lasso after season 3 because they felt they'd told the full story. But eventually, they made a fourth season because they figured out the right story to tell.
Fragoso asked if that could happen this time, where a story could unfold over time. Thankfully, Sudeikis didn’t rule it out.
Truth be told, we knew this going into season 4. While it would have been phenomenal to have a full, three-season arc as we did with the men’s team in the first three seasons, taking on the women’s team story was a daunting task, to say the least. Not just because of the scrutiny women in sports face, but we said goodbye to several characters we all knew and loved from the previous seasons.
However, throughout the fourth season, fans grew to love these characters more and wanted to see them succeed. We also got to know other characters we hadn't met before. For example, we got to know Ted’s wife and son a lot more, as they moved to England this time so his son could spend more time with him.
We also got to know Mae (Annette Badland) better. Later, we learned that it had once been her dream to become a professional footballer, but that wasn't an option when she was younger. Now, watching the girls play, it was an emotional moment for the character. We never would have gotten that without this season.
A lot of major things happened too, especially in the finale. There are so many questions about what happens next and how it might play out if the seasons go on. The fact that no writers’ room for season yet makes the reality of the situation feel much bleaker.

How Ted Lasso season 5 could continue
There are several ways this story could continue if they did move into another season.
For starters, Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham) and her beau have gotten engaged, which could be a whole plotline in itself. Roy (Brett Goldstein) and Keeley (Juno Temple) are also expecting a child together and have left Richmond. Roy is becoming head coach at Chelsea, his former club.
Then, Ted steps down as head coach of the women’s team to spend more time with his son, while Alice (Tanya Reynolds) is promoted. Ted takes on an assistant coaching role.
Several storylines with the players could be explored, too, including Shannon (Shannon Hayes) and her continued improvement on the team, Lizzie (Faye Marsay) and her struggles as a single mom while still killing it on the field, and Gemma (Abbie Hern) and her continued healing from her knee injury and her aim to become the best while also going to school.
Those are just examples of things that were really interesting during season 4. They are the stories I would love to see if a season 5 happened.
The season 4 finale ended in a way where, if they did want to leave it at that, they could. There are no real unresolved threads. Instead, we're just left with stories we wouldn’t mind seeing continued in a deeper, fuller way. It would be disappointing, to say the least, if the show ended here, but I could see this being the end of the road.
All I can truly hope for is that we’ll get an update real soon that Apple TV wants more of this team and more of these characters. Because if I can get that, I think I’ll be happy.
