We're one episode away from the big finish, but Lucky isn't finished with delivering surprise after surprise leading up to the finale. The penultimate episode still has quite the punch to pack, especially when Lucky and John made the curious decision to surrender themselves to Rand upon reuniting. But there's no doubt a bigger plan is in place since they fell into Rand's trap too easily.
Lucky season 1 episode 6 begins with John talking a mile a minute, telling stories from his past and about his dad and his first scam to Lucky while they're waiting together in a boardroom. The conversation turns to Lucky's first haul, which she earned at seven years old, a stark reminder at how long she's been living this life. Lucky watches from above as Rand walks back into the building.
Even though she doesn't trust Rand, Lucky expects her to make a deal because she knows what she wants. Rand and Gates join them in the boardroom. When Rand asks for the seed phrases, Lucky confidently turns her down. She wants immunity from all prosecution and John's sentence commuted, but Rand's not playing ball. Both sides are butting heads.
Lucky finally confronts her father and reveals the truth
Rand basically promises Lucky that she will spend the rest of her life in prison for the various charges she has racked up and John that she will send him off to another prison. Lucky tried to offer up Priscilla, but the deal wasn't enough. Lucky's forced to ask Rand what she wants her to do, which is get Priscilla and Whittaker. Rand's boss pulls her out of the room for a conversation.
It's not a positive conversation because Rand released John from prison without his approval, and he's angry. But Rand fights back against his doubts that Lucky can lead them to both Priscilla and Whittaker. He agrees to let Rand follow through since "it's her head." Back in the boardroom, Rand agrees to Lucky's deal, but Lucky needs to meet with Priscilla in person.
Lucky and John are put up in a hotel with two guards outside their door. Once they're alone, Lucky explains to her father that she's ready to be still, clearly exhausted from everything that she's been through. Later, John tells Lucky that he's proud of how she handled Rand and asks what her angle is with the money. But she doesn't have an angle. She really wants to be out of this life.
He wants them to keep the money, but she wants to buy their freedom. Finally, she's honest with her dad about how his greed and recklessness has ruined any semblance of normalcy she could have had in her life. He's under some weird impression that he was the Best Father Ever. She pushes back and makes him realizes how scared she has been and what she's missed out on.
Lucky also reveals that she helped the FBI build their case against Priscilla, which prompted John's arrest because Rand went back on their deal. John calls Lucky an idiot for believing Rand. Even after everything Lucky has admitted to him, he somehow finds the nerve to be hurt by Lucky's admission. "You took everything from me." Sir, how about what you took from your daughter?
Lucky meets with Rand to go over the procedures for her meeting with Priscilla with John joining them shortly after. He looks over the papers she presents about his sentence, and newly emboldened by his latest grudge, he acts unimpressed before signing. Gates escorts Lucky to her meeting, leaving John alone with Rand in the boardroom.
"Wherever you go, there you are"
It doesn't take long for John to start squawking again and attempting to push Rand's buttons. He's so holier than thou and certain that he's better than everyone, the victim in this situation. Rand peacefully contends that she may put her work above her child, but she didn't turn her kid into a commodity. She holds a mirror up to John to help him realize he's to blame for Lucky's position.
Lucky arrives at Priscilla's house and asks Dutch if she can meet with her, which she does at the stables. Their reunion isn't a particularly happy one when the subjects of John and Cary come up. Priscilla's certain that Lucky can't run away from who she is and her life, but Lucky throws that back in her face. Now it's time for Lucky to set the meeting with her and Whittaker.
She's not taking no for an answer when it comes to setting a meeting with Whittaker, laying out an ultimatum that she's handing him the money face-to-face or not at all. Priscilla begrudgingly agree to talk to him, but turns down the meeting place set by Lucky (a.k.a. Rand). When she returns to FBI headquarters, she informs Rand that the meet place needs to change to Whittaker's behest.
A shocking death before the meeting with Whittaker
Back at the hotel, John opens up about raising her on his own after her mom's death. He admits that he realized that he shouldn't have been raising her in a life of crime and apologizes for taking so long to understand what she went through. She rushes over to hug him after he tells her he's proud of the ways she's not like him. Later, Lucky takes a call and receives the meeting location.
As Rand and Gates look over the location on satellite, they realize that Whittaker chose a complicated location. An agent stitches a microphone into her jacker and Rand sets the plan. John warns Lucky about the hold Whittaker has over Priscilla. Rand listens to his warnings about the dangers ahead. Gates plays cards with John while they wait for the results, the agent clearly warming up to him.
Gates hears a noise when their card game ends, but when he radios a fellow agent, he gets no response. Drawing his gun, Gates leaves John's room and enters the empty hallway, and he shoots a man who shoots at him dead. Gates gets shot twice before a man walks up to him and shoots him in the head. Next, bullets hit the handle of John's door, and it's kicked to the ground.
