The last we saw Jackie and the boys was when the Walter patriarch suffered a massive stroke at the end of season 2. Almost everyone was at a crossroads before the second season concluded, whether it was Jackie and her love triangle or Will and his father at odds with each other because of the family business.
Everything suddenly comes to a standstill when George Walter is rushed to the hospital. The weeks that follow blur into an endless cycle of hospital visits and agonizing waiting. Everybody’s problems take a backseat when they see George literally fighting for his life. In other words, My Life with the Walter Boys season 3 has a bleak beginning with the kids trying to adjust to their new way of life.
The Walter household adjusts to a new reality
The episode begins with the Walter family taking turns staying at the hospital as George recovers. Although worried, Jackie stays back to avoid the feelings of her parents’ loss rushing back in. She tries to support the Walter family to the best of her abilities until everyone finds a sense of normalcy, especially Katherine. Despite putting up a strong front, Katherine inches closer to losing control with managing everything at the farm as well as her job.
Fortunately, after some time, George is able to return home, but he has a hard time adjusting to his physical condition. To avoid complicating the situation, Jackie doesn't confront Cole, giving him space to deal with his father’s condition. On the other hand, she does clear the air with Alex, who last heard her and Cole confess their love for each other.
Despite having his heart broken twice at the hands of the same girl, Alex becomes the bigger person by reassuring Jackie that they were never meant to be. Despite claiming that he still loved her sincerely, Alex admits that their relationship felt forced at times and that they were trying too hard. He advises Jackie to stop lying to herself and just be with whoever she wants, even if it's Cole.
Besides the Walters, other characters also go through major changes as season 3 kicks off. Grace is coping with her parents’ separation, and that feeling of wanting to get away inspires Jackie to work towards a teenage community space. Kiley and Dylan also navigate their budding romantic relationship as the two embrace the stark differences in their personalities and social standings.
Kiley doesn’t appreciate the fact that everyone keeps judging her for dating one of the most popular guys in school, but Dylan fails at reassuring her. However, the two later work their differences out, vowing to understand each other’s perspective and interests.
Alex becomes the official third wheel
The Cupid continues to be cruel to Alex by making him lose twice to his brother for a girl he fell in love with first. However, like the green flag he is, he understands and respects Jackie’s feelings. No matter how hurt he must have been while saying it, Alex reassures Jackie that they weren’t a good match to spare her all the guilt.
Unfortunately, in spite of maintaining a façade of strength, it is evident throughout the episode that Alex is hurting the most. He is unable to cope with his father’s situation; he feels deeply hurt over losing Jackie, and he sorely misses his best friend Kiley. In other words, for the time being, Alex is left being the third wheel in every relationship.
The only solace he can find is in his rodeo training, which seems to be paying off. What’s more, he was also mature enough to talk it out with Cole instead of giving him the cold shoulder or fighting. At the moment, it seems that Alex has a tough road ahead, but he may find himself at the end of it.
Jackie and Cole finally get together, but there’s a catch
The highlight of the episode was, of course, Jackie and Cole confirming their relationship. At first, they spend the whole episode contemplating the consequences of their decision, especially when the household is in such a fragile position. Therefore, Cole buries himself in fixing a race car for Mac, and Jackie pushes herself at school to avoid confronting each other.
However, a heartfelt moment with George makes Jackie realize what she is missing. Jackie was avoiding visiting George at the hospital because it brought back painful memories for her. She apologizes to George, and he makes her understand that life’s too short for feeling guilty all the time. He tells her to live in the moment without regretting anything for even a second.
This allows Jackie to muster up the courage to take a step towards the person she truly loved. She takes Cole by the waterfall and confesses that she’s done worrying about the future and wants to live in the moment and enjoy the time she has. She tells Cole she wants him, and they share their first-ever guilt-free kiss. The episode ends with Jackie and Cole finally being honest to each other, but they both have a feeling that their relationship wouldn’t be as easy as it seems.
