Outer Banks season 5 has finally arrived for our last adventure with the Pogues, and there are still so many questions left to be answered after JJ's death in season 4. After losing their beloved friend, the Pogues— plus Rafe—have a revenge mission in mind to track down Chandler Groff and the Blue Crown. But when it comes to the Pogues and their adventures, nothing's ever quite that easy.

Instead of picking up where we left off or with some action, Outer Banks season 5 episode 1 begins with young Kie building sandcastles on the beach when she notices a dolphin caught in a net. While helping free the dolphin, she searches for help and gets the attention of a young boy with a surfboard, who runs over and helps Kie. That's how she and JJ first met.

Back in real time, the Pogues bide their time after JJ's passing on an island, and their spirits aren't high as you could imagine. Rafe informs them that it's time, and they head off to somewhere in northern Morocco. Kie meets with two men to negotiate their transport to Lisbon. It's more expensive than they had planned ($6K each), but they have no other choice.

However, after Kie leaves the meeting, the two men have a bounty with Kie and JJ's pictures, and they're planning on turning Kie in to Anton Finch for a reward. Once the Pogues get to the boats that will take them to Spain, it's chaos. The men separate the passengers into groups of men and women. Again, they don't have a choice but to split up. Unfortunately, their boats go in different directions.

Where is the Blue Crown now?

John B saves a little boy, who was falling asleep, from falling overboard. The women's boat makes it closer to Spain, but the men's boat stops and a struggle ensues. Punches, gunshots, and attacks (which are a little difficult to see because of the lighting) lead John B to find out that the girls were taken to Getares. Kie, Sarah, and Cleo get off the boat and run into a raid.

The men lead the trio away from the raid and to supposed safety. Kie refuses to get into a car with them and pulls out her gun. Another struggle ensues as Cleo thinks on her feet and stabs one of the men's thighs, allowing them time to get away on foot. John B, Pope, and Rafe arrive at the same Getares shore and hear on a walkie talkie that they're headed to a church.

Kie, Sarah, and Cleo enter the church and split up to get away from the men chasing them. As John B, Pope, and Rafe begin searching the church, Sarah's found by one of the men, but John B tracks her down just as Cleo knocks the man out and saves Sarah. Kie calls on JJ for help seconds before she's held at gunpoint. Rafe hits the man over the head before he can pull the trigger or take Kie.

Getting her gun back, Kie discovers the bounty that the man quickly hands over. Now reunited, the crew heads off together in a Jeep that Cleo stole. Meanwhile, Chandler Groff holds the Blue Crown and cries over the "accidental" death of his son, a "terrible tragedy." The Pogues now have cash and thanks to Rafe, some redirection. He called Shoupe and learned Groff's headed to Dubrovnik.

Rafe also explains that Groff had previously been arrested for counterfeiting with a friend of his named Henrique, an antique shop owner in Dubrovnik. They realize they can longer trust Groff's word that he'll be in Lisbon and hop on a train to Croatia. Lo and behold, there's Groff visiting Henrique with the Blue Crown. It takes some convincing for Henrique to commit to a meeting with an authenticator.

Kie learns the location of Groff's meeting

As soon as Groff leaves the shop, the Pogues are right behind him, though they don't see him just yet. Kie decides to head into the shop alone. She uses the name Larissa, the name of JJ's mother, and tells Henrique that she's looking for her friend's dad, Chandler Groff. Henrique claims it's been ages since he's seen him. Kie turns on the charm and flirts with Henrique.

She offers to give him her number, and when she does, she continues to lay on the flirting to distract him enough to steal him phone. Outside, she meets back up with her friends and confirms from Henrique's calendar that Groff has a meeting with Medici at the museum for the Blue Crown. She leaves his phone on the steps and they're back on the run. Henrique quickly informs Chandler.

Even though he knows Kie will be on his tail for the meeting, Chandler doesn't cancel it. He approaches a man who looks a lot like him, likely for a backup rouse. In North Africa at the Corsair training grounds, Finch watches a video of his daughter playing piano. Dalia arrives with photos of the Pogues and news that Groff stole the crown. She also has the smugglers on hand.

Groff manages to double cross Kie

Finch gives them an option to join the Corsairs, but there's only room for one. He places the gun on the table, leading to a fight. Zac (Ali Lopez-Sohaili) shoots and kills Jurac (Josh Hooks) without a second thought to secure his place. Now, the Corairs are headed to Dubrovnik, too. It's going to be a whole party apparently. The Pogues use a map to plan how they will make their strike.

Rafe's priority is getting the Blue Crown, but Kie refuses to leave Groff for the cops. She wants to kill him herself for JJ and argues that no one in the group is acting like JJ saved their lives. John B joins Kie aside from the group to express his regrets and grief over JJ's death. In the morning, they have new clothes and take their positions in pairs to look out for Groff in the town square at the museum.

John B thinks he spots Groff and heads into the crowd, but Kie sees him front and center and heads off in pursuit on her own. The gang reunites and heads toward Kie in the direction of the gondolas. Kie follows Groff onto a gondola, but it's too crowded for her to make a move. She again follows him outside and when she catches up to him, hold him at gunpoint. But it's Groff's doppelgänger. From a distance, Groff watches the scene and reports Kie to the police. She's a sitting duck.
