Following an all-out chase in the first two episodes of the final season, the Pogues have officially hit their first major bout of bad luck in Outer Banks season 5. While Groff and Finch both got away, Finch with the Blue Crown, the Pogues ended up being corned by the police in Dubrovnik. There's nowhere to run and no way to get out of this particular pickle.

Outer Banks season 5 episode 3 begins with John B telling the story of Sarah's 20th birthday, which takes place five weeks after they were "shipped off" back home to Kildare. John B, Sarah, Kie, and Pope celebrate her birthday with a cake, but where's Cleo? What happened after the cops cornered them in Croatia? Well, at first, they were all locked up and forced to fight for their freedom.

Cleo was deported back to Bahamas and the rest of the group was sent home. As soon as they stepped foot on the dock in the OBX, Pope was arrested for cutting off his tracker. He received one month in jail and got drunk before heading in for his sentence. The rest of the Pogues and their families were blamed for the riot. John B and Sarah couldn't get jobs and had nowhere to live.

Rafe helps John B with a dangerous new score

John B and Sarah stayed with Rafe until he was also evicted. Meanwhile, Kie was sorting through her grief in therapy and lying low. When Pope was released from jail, his friends are surprised to find him in an oddly chill state. John B and Sarah tried living in the fish camp, but after one bad storm, the allure of roughing it outdoors set in the gravity of their situation.

On Sarah's birthday, their spirits are especially low. John B prays in the church for his luck to turn around. Later that day while crabbing, John B happened upon a mysterious package floating in the water. After opening it, he learns it's a massive package of marijuana. As it turns out, the package fell off a nearby boat while workers were loading their loot, and they catch John B riding away with it.

John B immediately takes the drugs to Rafe to ask for his advice. Rafe knows there are no good options. If John B gets caught with it, it's bad. If whoever lost it comes looking for it, it's bad. Rafe reminds him about what happened to Ben Rhodes, who found drugs and was killed. Still, Rafe admits it's worth $70K and they make a deal on the way to offload it to Barry.

Barry tries the weed and warns them that whoever lost it will come looking for it, but he counters Rafe's offer of $30K with $10K. John B starts a walkout, threatening to go with someone else, which secures them a $25K deal with Barry. John B gives Rafe his cut from the profit, but he hands it right back for Sarah's birthday. The birthday girl steals a dress from the laundromat and visits a friend.

Sarah drops by to see Mrs. Campbell, who she spent a lot of time with as kid with her friend Reese. They chat in her backyard, and Mrs. Campbell shares her worries about the direction Sarah's taking in life. Sarah puts on some waterworks during the conversation and makes an excuse to head inside for some water. However, she snags the keys to the Thompson's house.

John B and Sarah reunite and he reveals the wad of cash he made from "catching a bluefin." Like clockwork, the men from the drug boat are right on John B's tail. Back in Croatia one month earlier, Groff and Henrique take stock of their position and make a deal to find Finch and the crown. Groff has plans to become the king of Kildare. And just like that, he's off to see a widow.

John B gets a surprise at Sarah's birthday party and JJ's memorial

Things are turning around for John B and Sarah now that they have a house until October thanks to the unknowing Thompsons. It's clear that John B wants to give Sarah more and feels bad that he can't, but Sarah's not asking for any more than they currently have. Kie makes a cake for Sarah's birthday, and she also appears to be ready to say goodbye to JJ.

Since leaving jail, Pope has been getting high all day, every day. His dad puts pressure on him to move on with his life. Kie picks him for Sarah's birthday party, still smoking as his dad yells at him. Kie also gets on his case about smoking, throwing two of his joints out the window. On the way to the Thompsons, Kie and Pope are followed by security, forcing Kie to fend them off.

Meanwhile, Rafe meets up with Topper, who informs him that Rose is considering selling Tannyhill. He tries to talk Rafe into not contesting the sale, which would allow Topper and Dale to cut Rafe into the deal. Topper's excited about the prospect of the future of the island and the rebuilding that will take place. In the Bahamas, Cleo continues to make her way and find more opportunities.

Still at the bar, Rafe reunites with Sofia, and on his way out of the bar, Rafe gets into a scuffle with some other guys. He rage-baits them into a fight because he's looking for one. Rafe turns down Sofia's offer for a ride and continues to blame her for his situation. The Pogues hold a wake for JJ while sitting on surfboards on the water, eulogizing their friend through tears.

After Kie burns his photo, places it in the water, and throws his lighter into the ocean, the mood lightens for Sarah's birthday party. John B, Sarah, Kie, and Pope talk about their future plans, having been lightened by JJ's memorial. But the mood takes a turn again when John B spots the men from the boat waiting for him at the dock. Everyone goes inside while he goes to talk to them.

He lies through his teeth about the house being his, but the men cut to the chase and show him the photo of himself stealing the drugs. He then tries to fight them off to no avail. They give him three days to get the drugs back or $70K, putting Sarah's life on the line otherwise. John B returns to his friends as if nothing happened, but he has some serious stakes to consider now.
