Just when you thought things would start to look up for the Pogues once they returned to the Outer Banks from overseas, John B made a dangerous decision. After finding a massive package of marijuana on the water, he sold the drugs for a quick payday, but now he's on the hook for $70K or Sarah's life will be on the line. That's quite the new twist for the final season.
Outer Banks season 5 episode 4 begins with the guilt already eating at John B as he dreams that Sarah has been killed by the drug dealers. He doesn't share the truth with any of his friends and again turns to Rafe for help talking to Barry about backing out. Barry stumbles out of his trailer drunk with a gun, but he's not entertaining their woes with Julio. He already bought a Jet Ski with his profit.
John B threatens to sell Barry out to Julio and he then attempts to steal the Jet Ski, neither of which earn respect from Barry. Instead, he offers them the combination to a safe in Topper's house on Figure 8 where they can steal some money. Rafe offers his help by keeping Topper busy at a charity golf tournament all day, giving John B his opportunity to rob the safe.
Kie researches the Blue Crown's powers to revive the dead
Sofia overhears Dale and Topper talking about their plans for Kildare, which would displace the Pogues, but Dale clearly does not care. Kie attends church with her parents, and the stained glass window of Jesus stabbed on the cross reminds her of JJ. After mass, she receives a text message from Mr. Sunn, who offers her an old clothing item of JJ's that was in lost and found.
Mr. Sunn also reveals to Kie how the Blue Crown is connected to Denmark Tanny, who became interested in the occult and the artifact after his wife's death. Sunn explains that if you hold the crown and say the correct words at the right time and place, the dead can be revived. She agrees that it's probably just a story, but she very clearly holds hope that JJ could come back.
John B drops Rafe off at the country club, and before he makes his way to Figure 8, he wants to run what he's doing by Sarah first since he's having a crisis of conscience. However, Sarah isn't home when John B returns as she received a text message and rushed out on her bike. Instead, John B gets a visit from the drug dealers, who continue to give him a countdown.
Pope has a nightmare, remembering when he killed the Corsair. He finds a new joint in John B's car and lies down in the back. During the golf tournament, Dale approaches Rafe about coming aboard his plan to remake Kildare if he agrees to sell Tannyhill. Back at the Corsairs' headquarters, Finch's motivations for the crown to bring back his daughter Sadie are further highlighted.
In the Bahamas, Cleo goes into town to get snacks from a store, but when she realizes she's being followed, she outsmarts them and holds them at knifepoint. They're Finch's men asking questions about the Blue Crown. Stubby arrives for backup just before the exchange can get even more heated. John B gets to Topper's house and discovers that Pope was hiding out in the back of the van.
John B almost kills Topper's dad while robbing him
Pope agrees to be the lookout while John B goes inside to "drop off a package." He makes light work of breaking into the house, but he immediately trips a silent alarm. Topper's dad is home and appears to be drunk and in search of another drink. He notices the tip of John B's shoe and crowbar hiding behind a wall, and in fear of a burglar, he slips and falls on the stairs.
Luckily, Topper's dad isn't dead. John B calls Pope in for backup to carry the unconscious man upstairs, hoping that if he wakes up in bed, he won't remember his fall or that he saw John B. To answer Pope's questions, John B tells a version of what happened, leaving out that it was drugs, but keeping the stakes about Sarah intact. Speaking, of Sarah she finally reunites with Wheezie.
Her little sister asks Sarah to get her away from Rose, and Sarah reveals that she's pregnant. Wheezie informs Sarah that Rose has a new boyfriend who reminds her of their dad. Before John B and Pope can get to the safe, the Thornton's security company arrives to check on the house since the alarm went off. In their panic to hide, John B knocks over a heavy glass item that gives away their location.
They get lucky once again when Topper's dad wakes up enough to send the security guard away. Topper misses his last shot and loses the tournament, and his sour mood has him leaving the country club earlier than planned. Rafe tries to keep him there for a drink, but he's headed him. John B and Pope open the safe and take money just as Topper returns home.
Sarah reveals the identity of Rose's new boyfriend
John B asks Kie for help and backup at Topper's house, but he once again makes a terrible and easily avoidable mistake by spilling loose cash out of his backup that falls downstairs, alerting Topper to the fact that someone is robbing them. (How is he so bad at everything this season?) He and Pope hide under the bed, where John B's phone rings, but all Topper finds is his dad in bed.
Outside, Kie creates a distraction by hitting the left rearview mirror off Topper's car, giving John B and Pope enough time to escape and drive away, but not before getting caught on the security camera outside. Sofia gives Rafe a warning about what Dale has planned, but Rafe doesn't want to hear anything from Sofia because he's still made about her scamming him out of his money.
John B explains the truth to Kie and Pope about what happened with the drugs and how much he owes the dealer. They talk some sense into him and urge him to tell Sarah the truth, but when she rides up to them on her bike, she has urgent news about Rose's boyfriend. She presents the photo that Wheezie sent, and it's none other than Groff. So, that's the widow he had to see.
