We're halfway through the final season of Outer Banks, and the stakes continue to get higher for the Pogues. John B's $70K mistake still hangs over their heads as Sarah revealed that Chandler Groff happens to be Rose's new boyfriend. That certainly throws a wrench into their hunt for the Blue Crown and the real estate nightmare that threatens to overtake their home.

Outer Banks season 5 episode 5 picks up right where we left off as the Pogues process the fact that Groff is dating Rose and is back in Kildare. Rafe confronts Rose about selling Tannyhill. He wants his quarter of Tannyhill and the gold, which she has secured in a secret location. She needs to sell Tannyhill in order to make the gold legal, then they can all get their cut.

Rafe continues to bite back at Rose, prompting her to reveal that she has evidence that he killed Sheriff Peterkin, effectively blackmailing him into agreeing to sell Tannyhill. John B's finally honest with Sarah about the bale of weed and the bounty on her head, which she takes considerably well. She hides away on Rafe's boat while he (hopefully) fixes the situation within 24 hours.

John B teams up with an unlikely ally to get rid of Julio

John B asks Barracuda Mike for help with keeping Julio and his guys off of him for a week, but Mike doesn't want to get involved with Julio again after being on the boat for the Ben Rhodes incident. Mike suggests that he get out of town. Sarah tells Rafe that she will sign the papers to sell Tannyhill, which would help keep him out of jail. Still, Rafe is conflicted about the situation.

Kie and Pope talk over the Groff situation, and Kie hypothesizes that he's back to search Blackstone for more artifacts that are connected to the crown. Pope wonders if Kie is interested in the crown for reasons pertaining to its supposed powers, but she won't admit that. Meanwhile, Sarah comes up with the last-minute plan to get them out of their situation which involves calling on Shoupe.

John B offers up Julio to Shoupe and the police on a silver platter, appealing to him with the fact that Sarah is pregnant. John B admits that he owes Julio money and Sarah's life is on the line. Shoupe agrees to help them out since he also feels guilty about JJ's death. Kie and Pope arrive at Blackstone under the cover of night and dig through the abandoned house's papers and paintings.

Pope falls off of a chair while looking atop a bookshelf, but he managed to set off a trap door on his way down. The bookshelf opens up and leads to a basement full of more artifacts from the Genrette family museum. In a photograph, they notice a staff with writing on it that's definitely what they're looking for, but they're spooked by some company. Thankfully, it's not Groff.

How the scytale is connected to Denmark Tanny

The man reveals that what they're looking for is called a scytale and that Groff was looking for it, too. Groff explained to the man how important the scytale was in connection to the Blue Crown and how they could open up a portal to the underworld. He warns Kie and Pope against going to look for the scytale, but he also informs them that the artifact was sold to Denmark Tanny.

John B arrives for his meeting with Julio and his men, delivering the rest of his payment. Shoupe and the police immediately swarm, leaving Julio nowhere to run. They also make it seem like John B's under arrest, but they curiously don't arrest Julio's men. Unfortunately, they're still trailing John B and Sarah. There troubles appear to be far from over with these drug dealers.

Cleo returns to the OBX just in time to lift everyone's spirits with a reunion and rejoin the hunt for the Blue Crown and now the scytale. Kie explains the supernatural myths attached to the artifacts, which both Finch and Groff are after. The Pogues agree to beat Groff to the scytale, give it to Finch, and get Groff arrested in the process. That will be their revenge.

Sarah recognizes the scytale from her mom's castle growing up and believes it could still be among her things in the abandoned home. On the way to her mom's castle, she and John B realize that they're being followed by Julio's men. When they reach a crossing, they ditch the car and run over the bridge to the other side. Kie talks to Rafe, and he knows she wants to believe in the scytale's power.

John B and Sarah arrived at the castle on foot, breaking into the untouched home that's still full of her family's photos. They head up to the attic and search for the scytale, where Sarah finds an address for her mother in New Orleans. Unfortunately, the box for the scytale is empty save for a note and Julio's men have tracked them down. But surprise! Groff's also hiding in the attic and has Sarah.
