It’s been a frustrating journey for our hero in Reacher season 4. Every time Jack Reacher (Alan Ritchison) thinks he’s getting ahead, something arrives to set him back.
That was the case in episode 5 as he got the elusive drive but ended things in a standoff with Lila (Agnez Mo) as she held Jacob (Christopher Rodriguez Marquette) at the point of a knife. How would that be resolved? We got the answer in season 4 episode 6, “Plum Out of Luck.”
A standoff
We pick up where we left off, with Lila holding Jacob, a knife to his throat, demanding to have the drive. Green (Sydelle Noel) has her gun drawn, but Amisha (Anggun) is there to back up Lila. Just when it seems like there is no way out, Plum (Kevin Weisman) wanders in. It’s part of the distraction. The other part is that another mercenary group has found them and opens fire.
In the confusion, Jacob breaks free. But Plum catches a bullet, leaving him in serious peril. In the chaos the drive is free and snatched by Lila. Reacher and Green give chase, but Lila and Amisha escape with the drive. With the immediate threat passed and nothing to be done, Reacher and Green turn back to the problem of Plum.
He’s wounded and not doing well, so Jacob offers to take him to the ER. It’s a dangerous move, but he feels guilty for not doing more to protect his new friend. Before they go, Plum tells the group the man in the photo is Leo Alquist, giving them a new lead. Reacher and Green track down the lead while Jacob heads off. Neither of them is too successful.
Betrayal
Jacob takes Plum to the emergency room. A gunshot, predictably, draws attention. At first, Jacob plays it off like they were bystanders caught in the crossfire. But when his picture pops up on an alert, he’s forced to run. He escapes the hospital, but he’s alone and out of options. So, he gives Uncle Monty (Nick Searcy) a call.
Monty agrees to come pick him up to help. Instead, Monty holds him while the Philadelphia police arrive. Despite Jacob’s protests and Monty’s unease when the police arrive, Jacob is taken into custody. That would seem to put him in some serious jeopardy. But the officer that collects him is Detective Docherty (Kevin Corrigan).
As we leave off, Docherty has Jacob and is taking him alone. Previously, Docherty indicated to Reacher he had no plans to get involved and help. He’s been pushed to remember he’s a good cop who could and should do more. I can’t help but think, especially at this late point in the season, that he is finally ready to step up and get involved.
Finding Leo
Meanwhile, Reacher and Green make their way to the man in the photo. It isn’t easy since their own photos are plastered everywhere. They are wanted fugitives, and every cop in the city is gunning for them. Not just cops, but the CIA and other groups unknown. Still, Reacher and Green make it to their destination and use Green’s badge and some intimidation to get back to see Leo Alquist (Shawn Doyle).
As it turns out, he’s been waiting for them. He got tipped off when the data breach occurred, and he’s been working to circle the wagons. In fact, they catch him destroying data drives, which indicates there is more to the story. But before they can pressure an answer out of him, his backup arrives. The mercenaries who have been seeking the drive and seeking to put the hurt on Reacher and others actually work for Alquist.
While Reacher and Green try to fight their way out, there are too many. Soon they’re bound and thrown in a van. While being driven out to the country, it’s clear this is an execution mission. But Reacher intends to die with dignity, and he pushes Green to do the same. The van stops, the door opens, and the credits roll. It’s not looking good for our heroes.
At some point it was clear Congressman Sampson (Marc Blucas) would get involved. In the episode, he decides to play offense and find Reacher, Leo Alquist, and some answers. That makes me think that it will be Sampson’s men who find Reacher just in time, but is he there to help or make things more complicated? That’s an open question, and it will largely depend on what Leo Alquist is hiding.
