The hit Prime Video series Reacher is back for a fourth season on Aug. 12, and there are a few key reasons why fans should be excited.
The new season kicks off with Reacher encountering a strange woman named Anna on a subway. Noticeably distressed, Reacher tries to diffuse what he believes might be a potential suicide bomber. But before the conversation can progress, she kills herself.
The suicide thrusts Reacher into a deep, growing conspiracy where he’s forced to face off with corrupt politicians and even more corrupt law enforcement agencies who will do anything to protect their images.
Star Alan Ritchson confirmed to Men’s Journal that the season is going to be loaded with action. “It’s a gauntlet. I mean, it’s just a labyrinth of fights,” he told the outlet. “We shot 11 fights in the first four weeks, and we’ve never shot anything close to that pace. Everywhere Reacher turns, he’s got another group on his heels. It’s fun, wild, and nonstop, and we haven’t done anything like it yet.”
Here’s why you should be excited for the fourth season of Reacher, and what fans can expect.
The season 4 cast is wild and varied
One of the coolest and craziest parts about Reacher’s fourth season is the diverse and totally unexpected cast. There are a few characters played by veteran crime film actors, like Kevin Corrigan, who has held supporting roles in iconic crime films for 40 years, including Goodfellas, The Departed, and Bad Boys.
But other cast members are less expected — most notably Agnez Mo and Anggun. The two play a daughter and mother who are connected to Anna’s suicide. But here’s what’s really interesting. Mo and Anggun are both incredibly famous (and arguably the most famous) Indonesian musicians around right now.
Mo has over 30.9 million followers on Instagram and dozens of huge hits in Indonesia. Two of her songs, “Overdose” and “Patience,” even gained international traction and charted on Billboard across the globe.
Anggun is also a prolific musician and is best known for her 1997 album, Snow on the Sahara. The album went triple platinum in Indonesia and went platinum in two other countries, as well as going gold in five more across the world. She’s also known for lending vocals to the musical group Enigma.
Having these two colossal stars in the season is sure to draw a massive international audience to the show. It’s also fun to watch the dynamic of these two wildly famous singers playing characters like this.
The plot is much more of a political thriller than previous seasons
Reacher has always been famous for its great action, but season 4 adds another layer thanks to the great conspiracy that’s underlying the entire plot. This season isn’t just hardcore action.
It’s all wrapped up in a really intriguing political thriller where you never know who to trust. Watching this season will definitely stir up vibes of hits like Homeland, Slow Horses, and The Americans.
The intriguing plot also makes the fourth season really stand out because, while action shows are great and I love to watch them, there’s just a lot of them out there. Adding some juicy political drama into the mix makes the new season feel fresh and exciting.
The genre-blending works perfectly
On top of the political aspect of the new season, it’s also got tons of police procedural vibes as well. After witnessing the suicide in Philadelphia, Reacher seeks the help of Philly PD detective Tamara Green. He also discovers that Anna’s brother (also a police officer) has come to town after learning of her death.
The big-city, East Coast setting combined with Reacher working with detectives and police officers gives the show a great dose of police procedurals. There’s some real NYPD Blue energy throughout the season, and the banter between Reacher (a hardened action star) and Tamara (a police officer just trying to get a paycheck) is a lot of fun.
Somehow, the fourth season flawlessly shifts between lone wolf action hero, political thriller, and police procedural without feeling choppy or messy. In fact, the genre-swapping actually helps this season and makes it incredibly compelling and bingeable.
