If you're ready for a brand-new season of Shrinking on Apple TV, you're not alone. We're counting down the days until the comedy-drama from Bill Lawrence returns with new episodes. Thankfully, the fourth season is already in the works and we have lots of updates to catch up on.
Shrinking season 4 was formally renewed by Apple TV back in January 2026, ahead of the season 3 premiere that same month. Fortunately, that made the very final season-coded third season easier to watch, knowing that the story would continue. But we're in for a whole new world.
While the entire main cast will be returning, there are some changes in store for Shrinking season 4, which includes storylines pushed into the future and new cast members. We're sharing the three biggest updates fans need to know about the fourth season before the show returns next year!
There's a time jump and completely new story
Following the conclusion of Shrinking season 3, Lawrence confirmed that the story being told in the show's first three seasons has been completed. Jimmy's journey through his grief surrounding his wife's death has reached a turning point, and when we reunite with him in season 4, he's in a new place in his life. But this might not include Sofi (Cobie Smulders) despite their date.
Smulders became a series regular in The Lincoln Lawyer season 5 on Netflix, which was filming at about the same time (also in Los Angeles, which is a bonus), and she's being eyed to lead a possible spinoff series. Sofi could be part of Jimmy's new journey, but we'll have to wait and see. What we do know is that season 4 will pick up about one or two years into the future.
Lawrence confirmed the show's most significant time jump yet, which will push us past a number of things that were set up in the season 3 finale: Paul's move to Connecticut, Alice going to college, Liz and Derek becoming grandparents, Gaby getting married to Derrick, and Brian and Charlie further settling into parenthood. It will be very interesting to see how their lives have changed in this time.
Judith Light and more have joined the cast
As previously mentioned, in spite Shrinking season 4 employing a year-plus time jump, all of the show's main cast members have been confirmed to be reprising their roles in a series regular capacity: Jason Segel, Harrison Ford, Christa Miller, Jessica Williams, Luke Tennie, Michael Urie, Lukita Maxwell, and Ted McGinley.
Additionally, frequent recurring stars like Damon Wayans Jr., Wendie Malick, Devin Kawaoka, and others are also expected to return in the new season. However, since season 4 will be opening the show up to a new story, there will be new cast members joining the fold. As Variety has confirmed, the fourth season welcomes Christian Slater, Karen Gillan, and Judith Light as guest and recurring stars.
Before the season has premiered, details about who Slater, Gillan, and Light will be playing in season 4 haven't been revealed. As of September 2026, there are no character names or descriptions to share, but we can only imagine the exciting characters the writers have come up with and the great and unique performances these three talented stars will bring to the established hit.
Filming for season 4 began in May 2026
If you thought that because Shrinking season 4 is lightly retooling the series that there would be a longer wait for its premiere, you don't have to worry. The new season will be hitting our watch lists right on time. Earlier this spring, series star Harrison Ford revealed the the gang would be getting back together to begin production in May 2026.
Since filming began in May, the cast and crew have been hard at work making the new episodes throughout the summer, and while there isn't a reported wrap date as of this writing, they should be finishing up very soon based on past production timelines. The third season filmed between February and July 2025, which is about four months.
Once filming officially wraps, post-production will then begin. While Apple TV hasn't indicated a release window just yet, Shrinking season 4 should begin rolling out in January 2027. But if the season needs to be pushed a bit, we could be waiting until February or March. However, this is merely a prediction. We'll share more official updates as they're announced.
