Silo season 3 has taken fans on a journey across two timelines as we fight for the people of Silo 18 in the present while learning about how we got to this point in the past.
That duality continues in Silo season 3 episode 9, “Farewell,” which is the penultimate episode of the season. It features some big resolutions in the present and in the past as we move toward the season 3 finale.
Bernard’s last stand
We have a complicated relationship with Bernard (Tim Robbins), who was the villain of the first two seasons and has become something else in season 3. He decides to step up again with Juliette (Rebecca Ferguson) captured at the end of episode 8.
Bernard turns himself in and quickly asks Camille (Alexandria Riley) to meet with the voice in IT. Bernard pleads his case and tries to reason with the voice in IT. Instead, it orders him to be sent out to clean, a death sentence, while continuing the Vitamin D+ in the Silo.
It's also clear that Juliette and Rob (Common) won’t last long once the drugs take effect. All in all, it’s a grim outcome. But it’s meant as a distraction so that Martha (Harriet Walter) can get Plan B in place. That means blowing up the delivery system in water filtration, using Bernard’s cleaning as the distraction for the Silo, Camille, and everyone else, but they need help.
Martha and the others bring in Sheriff Paul (Chinaza Uche). He is a rule-follower, but he’s not sure whose rules should be followed. He also uncovered something that can help the plan. So, Sheriff Paul shows Martha, Knox (Shane McRae) and Shirley (Remmie Milner) to the secret lift, which enables them to put their plan in motion.
They also try to make a show to get Bernard released, or at least a stay. But Camille threatens to kill everyone, so Juliette intercedes and sends her friends away. They may be able to destroy the Vitamin D+ delivery system, but they can’t spare Bernard. Before he goes, he has a theory. His theory is the voice from Silo 1 isn’t an AI, but rather a human—or a series of humans—trying to work things out. If true, that would make the infallible plans that so many have followed for so long an even bigger lie.
Bernard posed the truth to Camille, and though she seemed to find it possible, she is unwilling to divert from the plan. But that doesn’t mean that Juliette will. Bernard tells Juliette she was chosen for a reason and to keep fighting. He then goes out to clean, sent without a suit, slumping quickly beneath a tree in the distance. His fight and journey is over, but the fight for the Silo is just beginning.
The Silos begin
Meanwhile, we head back to the past. It’s been some time, and Daniel (Ashley Zukerman) and Helen (Jessica Henwick) are happy together. In fact, Helen is pregnant and due to give birth soon. But they are back in town because the Silos are finished, and they’ve been invited to the grand unveiling. Daniel is surprised, believing he ruffled some feathers when he declined the offer, but he has been invited nonetheless.
He gets to connect with Charlotte (Jessica Brown Findlay) first. She, too, seems happy. She’s settled and married to Anna (Morven Christie). Though they have their own struggles, they are happy and settled. It does Daniel good to see his sister seemingly happy, but it isn’t going to last.
As they show up for the tour, Daniel and Helen are assigned to tour different Silos. Helen is sent with the public to Silo 18. Daniel, meanwhile, is invited to meet with Stenson (Colin Hanks) and Senator Thurman (Laura Innes) as Silo 1. Daniel gets a series of strange texts, which cause him alarm. He leaves and tries to find Helen. At the same time, she gets a strange feeling and goes to find Daniel.
Daniel goes to the top of the berm, where he can see Helen in a similar spot at Silo 18. As they are on the phone looking to reach each other, a nuclear bomb explodes. It forces everyone to retreat to a Silo, leaving Daniel and Helen separated. Daniel heads to Silo 1, while Helen goes to Silo 18. And so, it appears we finally see how it all began.
This was a banger of an episode as we prepare for the Silo season 3 finale, which arrives on Friday, Sept. 4.
It was the final goodbye for Bernard—probably. And likely the start of a bigger war. But is it true that the voice is a person in disguise? If so, what does it all mean?
Then, we learn that Daniel and Helen were part of the original Silos, separated into the Silos that are the focus of what’s happening right now. How will their story — and their offspring — play into what’s happening now? I can’t wait for the finale to get some answers.
