As Silo season 3 nears its conclusion, several questions and mysteries still linger. We finally know why and who built the silos, but we are yet to learn how exactly the world really ended. People were forced into these underground societies. Why have they been subjected to brutal responses like the Safeguard procedure?
Nonetheless, while many pieces are starting to come together, one mystery and its implications on the larger narrative remain puzzling. Orla Kent was introduced as Supply’s shadow at the start of season 3, who was concerned about theft in Critical Supply. She believed someone was stealing valuable supplies needed to sustain the silo.
Unfortunately, she was later reported missing by her sister, who was convinced that something bad had happened to her because she always checked in with her family no matter what. Sheriff Billings took it upon himself to investigate her sudden disappearance, which later turned into a full-fledged murder mystery.
Orla Kent’s death has been a mystery since the beginning of season 3
Orla Kent was declared missing quite early on in the show, but her case gained traction when Billings learned about the animosity between Glenda Hardwood and Orla over the Supply shadow position. What’s more, they also dated the same man, Mike Davidson, who was Orla’s current boyfriend. Therefore, Glenda ticked all the boxes for a potential suspect.
However, it became all the more complicated when Orla’s body was found in the mines amidst the fumigation chaos. It would seem that the mystery was solved and that Orla was just at the wrong place at the wrong time, but it became evident after the autopsy that she wasn’t killed because of poisoning and that someone killed her and placed the body in the mines.
Solving her murder became both Silo season 3’s and Billings’ most important mission because it made us naturally assume that her demise would somehow connect to a ploy that was about to cause mayhem. The way the show gave her death so much importance, it almost felt that she knew something that she wasn’t supposed to know — a silo secret, maybe.
Billings’ investigation led him to discover that someone had been stealing light bulbs and other equipment from Critical Supply, which only gives the silo a few years’ worth of material for survival. From there on, all the threads led to one person, Ed Hardwood. It turned out that Hardwood had Knox’s father build some kind of distribution system for him during the rebellion.
They discovered a hidden elevator system that connected Critical Supply to Construction. Of course, all the evidence was stacked against Hardwood, but in a shocking turn of events, he revealed that it was actually Mike who killed Orla because she caught him stealing. Mike is arrested, and that’s the end of it. We were left thinking there might be more to it than just that, but the twist never came.
Her death had nothing to do with Juliette and her problems
Silo season 3 made us feel as if Orla’s death was building up to a huge conspiracy that would come to light once her killer was caught. However, it turned out to be nothing more than a secret theft gone wrong. Orla must have discovered the hidden lift system, and since Mike was involved in the theft, he preferred to shut her mouth forever rather than go out cleaning.
Still, it makes no sense to dedicate so much time to a mystery that in itself contributed virtually nothing to Juliette’s battle against Camille and the Algorithm. Fans were waiting for the big silo secret that Orla stumbled upon, which could have changed the course of everything.
Unfortunately, the way the show wrapped up her arc leaves little to no room for the possibility that her death could lead to something big. On the other hand, there could be a possibility that Orla did witness something along with the theft and that Mike’s actions ended up being a convenience.
What if Orla discovered a secret passageway or a construction that may have threatened to reveal something about the silos? Maybe Mike was manipulated and instructed by someone that his secret was blown and the only way to deal with it was to kill Orla. This is the only thing that can explain the stir around her death.
Silo is a deeply layered show filled with twists and turns that give the chills, but Orla’s storyline is yet to offer that closure. Now that her case is solved, there’s no need for anyone to take a closer look at things, but the show is yet to expand on the lift discovery. It’s possible that Hardwood’s “distribution” system could lead Juliette and her party to find a way to stop the Safeguard procedure.
Until we know for sure what secrets lie behind incorporating a seemingly isolated murder mystery when Juliette has so much on her plate, the only thing we can do is go back and rewatch Silo season 3 for more clues.
