Following Task's big Emmy Award win for Tom Pelphrey's incredible performance in season 1, HBO boss Casey Bloys offered an update on the second season's filming process and teased when fans can expect Mark Ruffalo to return to our screens with Tom Brandis' next case.
Bloys chatted with Deadline after HBO and HBO Max's latest stellar run at the Emmy Awards and gave the outlet updates on a number of new and return shows, like The Pitt, Harry Potter, The White Lotus, Heated Rivalry, and The Gilded Age. Obviously, he also opened up about Task season 2 since Pelphrey took home his first Primetime Emmy Award and Ruffalo's back to work on set.
Task season 2 began filming in July and continued throughout the summer, with production expected to wrap up before the end of 2026. Bloys provided the update that the cast and crew are actively filming and "about halfway through" the process, which makes sense given the rumored December wrap date. But will the new episodes premiere before the May 2027 cutoff for Emmy eligibility?

Task season 2 will premiere after 2027 Emmys eligibility
Unfortunately, that's the downside of this Task season 2 update. Bloys provided the first official hint at the release window for the second season, and it looks like we're looking at a premiere on HBO and HBO Max sometime after May 31, 2027. Being so, Ruffalo and his castmates won't be making a return trip to the Emmys next year, and we'll catch back up with them in 2028.
Since Task season 2 probably won't premiere before June 2027, we can presume that the cable network will be strategic in setting the premiere date for season 2. There's wide gap for when that could happen, which is anywhere between summer and fall. Considering the first season launch in early September back in 2025, a safe bet would be another September bow in 2027.
HBO hasn't revealed how many episodes Task season 2 will contain, but the first season had seven episodes that released weekly. It's a safe assumption that the second season will have at least seven episodes again for another seven-week airing on HBO and HBO Max. We can also anticipate the show to air on Sunday nights as another show that brings fans together in community online.
Ahead of the show's return next year, there's not much known about the plot of the new season beyond that Tom Brandis will be leading another specialized task force and working through a conflict with potentially corrupt DEA agents. Once again, he will be leading this new team outside of Philadelphia, and season 2 connects the show to creator Brad Ingelsby's hit Mare of Easttown.
Task season 2 finds Mare of Easttown star Julianne Nicholson reprising her role as Lori Ross from the 2021 HBO limited series. Martha Plimpton, Silvia Dionicio, and Andrew Russel are coming back in their roles season 1, while season 2 adds newcomers Mahershala Ali, Édgar Ramirez, Harry Melling, Adam Nagaitis, Aminah Nieves, Rose Rollins, Tim Blake Nelson, Jharrel Jerome, Brían F. O'Byrne, Kevin Dunn, Bethlehem Million, Stephanie Sigman, Alaíde, Rocío Guzmán, Regina Nava, and Carol Santiago.
Stay tuned for more Task season 2 news and updates as filming continues!
