The third season of Netflix’s hit YA series My Life with the Walter Boys is out and about, and it’s not looking good for anyone’s love life. The last we saw Jackie and the Walter boys was when Alex caught Cole and Jackie professing their love for one another. However, before they could work it out, George was rushed to the hospital.
Good news, George survived, but Jackie and Alex’s relationship didn’t. Well, everyone knew for obvious reasons that their relationship was never going to work out. They lacked the electricity Jackie felt whenever Cole was in close proximity. It was always going to be him, and their passionate confession proved it. But does their love withstand the test of Silver Falls?
Jackie broke up with Alex at the beginning of season 3
Jackie and Alex made a cute couple, and he was always the safer choice. He was the perfect boyfriend and son, but of course, who can deny the ‘Cole Effect?’ He has the charm, the bad-boy aura, and the troubled-boy appeal that naturally makes girls like Jackie want to fix him.
Rightfully so, it’s safe to say that the only reason Alex and Jackie didn’t work out was that they had no passion or chemistry. Even though Jackie felt bad about betraying Alex, she eventually talked to him after her confession to Cole. Surprisingly, instead of holding it against her, Alex realized that he couldn’t keep Jackie.
He admitted that their relationship felt forced at times and that it was better for her to be with someone she felt intensely about. Luckily, it wasn’t a messy breakup; on the contrary, Jackie and Alex called it quits on good terms. Even though it was harder for Alex, he understood that it was better to feel hurt once and get it over with than to be with Jackie and have her think about someone else.
Cole and Jackie decide to make their relationship official
After her breakup with Alex, Jackie and Cole decided to lay low at least until George got better. However, they couldn’t help but feel guilty all the time because they had hurt Alex one way or another. What’s more, it also became awkward for Katherine to console one son while rooting for the other.
At first, they decided to keep their distance and to bury the possibility of their relationship deep within. However, when George told Jackie to live in the moment without regretting it, she immediately understood that it was now or never. She was convinced that now may be all they have and life’s too short not to take chances.
This pep talk was exactly what Cole needed, and the two start dating—secretly. It’s like somehow they knew that no one would approve of their relationship, and that’s exactly what happened. Since Jackie was experiencing an intense first love, she let loose a bit.
Unfortunately, every step that Jackie took towards being a normal teenager was blamed on Cole and his ‘bad influence.’ They eventually made their relationship public, but Jackie’s carefree lifestyle didn’t sit well with Richard or Elliot. Honestly, they may care about Jackie, but what they expected of her was selfish.
They didn’t want Jackie to forget her old life and the ambitions she had when she was in New York. Ironically, neither Elliot nor Richard was there when she needed them the most, but now they are at the forefront of protecting Jackie’s future.
Both Richard and Elliot practically pressured Cole into breaking things off with her. All it took was one slipping grade and skipping a class for everyone to label Cole as a delinquent boyfriend. Unfortunately, it worked, and Cole ended up breaking up with Jackie in the worst way possible.
He knew that the only way to drive Jackie away was to break her heart so badly that she wouldn’t want to look at his face. That’s exactly what he did when he told Jackie that she was too much and whatever she did felt like a lot for Cole to cope with. He basically called her ‘boring’ and reinforced his playboy image.
Ultimately, what Cole did wasn’t needed, especially after the development he went through. Pulling off a move like that without talking things out first felt like something the old Cole would do. The self-loathing, the insecurity, and the eventual self-destruction were traits of the bad-boy persona he used to have, but he used these exact things as an excuse to end his relationship with Jackie.
Cole makes a regrettable decision about his relationship
Cole broke up with Jackie, but he couldn’t help staying away from her. He looked out for her from the background, but it all felt unnecessary. If not for the lack of a better word, we would say Cole acted too dramatically. Future plans and academic goals aren’t something they couldn’t have worked out—they should have taken lessons from Erin and Danny.
Anyways, given the circumstances, Cole later realized that he had made a huge mistake by letting Jackie go. It took one bad street race and his parents to make him understand that Jackie is a grown-up woman who doesn’t need others to make decisions for her.
However, when the time came for the grand gesture, My Life with the Walter Boys couldn’t help but leave a huge cliffhanger for us to agonize over. When Cole was on his way to Jackie’s party at the community space, a furious Danvers intercepted. In a fit of rage, he crashed into Cole’s car a couple of times before derailing him, and he ended up rolling in his car at the side of the road.
We never see what happens to Cole because the screen cuts to Jackie, who is dancing with Elliot, and she wraps up the season finale with a kiss that should have been with Cole. Could this be the end of Jackie and Cole’s turbulent love story? Will Cole survive and live to see Jackie with the guy he hates the most right now? Well, we’ll have to wait and see what happens in My Life with the Walter Boys season 4.
