Romance in the ton has never been easy for any debutante. The weight of familial responsibilities and the pressures of securing a title have always been the driving factors for any gal or gentleman seeking a marriage prospect. However, the Bridgerton household has always stood above societal norms, prioritizing emotional stability and long-lasting love.

From Daphne and Simon to Colin and Penelope, each Bridgerton child has found their version of a fairytale love story across four seasons, but it wouldn’t have been possible without Mama Bridgerton. Ruth Gemmell’s Lady Violet has been the voice of reason and love in every season, giving each of her children’s romances a unique perspective.

It is through her wise words and maturity that the audience learns of the values that make the Bridgerton household special. However, the show never really explores Violet and Edmund’s romance in the flesh…until now! Yes, a Bridgerton prequel focused on Viscount and Lady Bridgerton is officially in the works at Netflix, and here’s why it’s the franchise’s best move right now.

A Violet Bridgerton story is reportedly in the works

Netflix has officially announced an untitled Bridgerton prequel series, helmed by Shonda Rhimes and Nicholas Nardini. The limited series will follow a young Violet Bridgerton as she navigates the ton’s cutthroat marriage market and the social expectations that come with it. It’ll be like an origin story of the great Bridgerton family, exploring the events and characters who shaped the oncoming generation’s future.

Co-written by Rhimes and Nardini, with Tom Verica and Betsy Beers serving as executive producers, the prequel series is yet to have a release date, but reports suggest that work on the show is currently underway. According to a Lady Whistledown-style announcement by Netflix, the upcoming spinoff series will chronicle the romance that started it all.

We’ll finally learn the magical story behind the fateful meeting between the Bridgerton matriarch and patriarch. The news comes amidst the growing uncertainty and frustration with long gaps between seasons. The wait not only affects viewership but also risks jeopardizing the audience’s emotional bond with the story. Therefore, several franchises, including Bridgerton, have found that the best way to keep the magic alive is to expand the universe.

Bridgerton already has a successful outing with a spinoff series, Queen Charlotte by Shonda Rhimes. Fans absolutely adored the blissful yet complicated romance of Charlotte and how it morphed her views of love, marriage, and partnership. The show also chronicled key aspects of characters like Lady Danbury, who are often seen acting as supporting pillars in the parent series.

Spinoffs like Queen Charlotte and the upcoming Violet Bridgerton prequel offer rare opportunities to flesh out supporting characters that are often overlooked in their emotional struggles and personal achievements. For instance, fans know that Violet got her happily ever after because that’s how she portrays it in front of her children, but was it really?

Was her marriage with Edmund an affair as passionate as Daphne and Anthony’s, or were they forced into a bond because of a scandal? The audience is well-aware of the positive influence of their marriage on the Bridgerton children, but how were they able to find their happily-ever-after? Was it really, or does Violet only put on a charade of a perfect marriage to keep her children’s fantasies alive? All these questions can only be answered by the spinoff the fans are desperately waiting for.

For a franchise like Bridgerton, longevity isn’t about churning out season after season; rather, it’s about giving the audience compelling reasons to keep coming back. Expansion is one of the best ways to keep things fresh, and what better than to go back to the beginning? A story exploring the emotional depths of characters from a different generation often strengthens the lore and often captivates audiences in their own right.

When could the new Bridgerton spinoff series release?

There’s a lot going on in the Bridgerton universe, but fans have been deprived of certainty for almost all the ongoing projects. Bridgerton season 5, which will focus on Francesca’s second chance at romance with Michaela, is reportedly in production, but Netflix still hasn’t announced a release date. As far as reports can tell, the latest entry might slip down to a 2028 window.

What’s more, Bridgerton season 6 was also greenlit back in 2025, but the only thing we know about it is that it’ll be centered around Eloise’s story. So, the only logical course of action for a spinoff release would be to squeeze it in somewhere between seasons 5 and 6, or even earlier; we’re aiming for the stars here.

Ultimately, as of now, there’s no news of a Bridgerton drama making waves on Netflix in 2027, but a person can dream. After all, who wouldn’t want to relive the magic of the ton through Mama Bridgerton’s eyes, especially when she’s busy steering one of her children toward the right path? It’ll be a delight to experience Regency-era elegance when things were tougher, and debutantes were pushed toward societal stability rather than searching for true love.

From Francesca's unconventional path to love to Violet's own romantic beginnings, there's still plenty of emotional territory for Bridgerton to explore. A Violet-focused prequel could do more than give fans another sweeping Regency romance; it could deepen the family history that makes the main series so compelling and keep audiences invested in the world between seasons. Until Netflix reveals what's next, fans can always return to all four seasons of the swoon-worthy drama streaming on the platform.
