Are True Detective Spoofs Part of Popular Culture Now?
Popular things tend to be spoofed and parody. That’s just the way it is, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. When looking back at past popular series, however, it was difficult to come up with a situation like True Detective. True Detective spoofs have been plentiful since even before the first season ended and they’ve been continuing strong ever since. Even Sesame Street took a whack at it, which is a type of praise rarely seen.

Parodies of True Detective tend to focus around Matthew McConagughey and the role that revitalized his dramatic acting career, and that has in-turn put a certain amount of pressure on his successors. Jokes about Vince Vaughn have already started before filming.
True Detective offers such a serious world that frankly it could use a few good pokes every once in a while. Creator and writer Nic Pizzolatto has not commented on these spoofs, but hopefully he takes them with good humor. True Detective swiftly entered the cultural zeitgeist in a big way, and it’s a compliment to it that it has so far been able to stay there.
It’s tough to say what season two will bring, but hopefully it will continue to provide fans a way to good-naturedly poke fun. Spoofing True Detective has become just another regular thing on the internet, and that’s a really good thing.
