Could There Ever Be a True Detective Movie?

We already encourage fans to think of the True Detective seasons as isolated films, but what about an actual film? There’s no denying that True Detective is a cinematic and affecting experience. Much of that is due in part to director Cary Fukunaga and cinematographer Adam Arkapaw.

A film might also be the only way to resist past characters. It would behoove viewers to be comfortable with letting go of Rust and Marty, but a film would allow for possible cameos in the a way that the series does not. We’re not even sure if the season two is going to take place in these same universe as The Yellow King, but a feature film could successfully tie the seasons together.

It would also give Cary Fukunaga a chance to return to directing the series, especially considering that his Executive Producer role for season two may be more of a title than anything else. True Detective lends itself so naturally to film that it’s only natural to want to see it progress in that direction. HBO hasn’t had much interest or success with films in the past, but True Detective being an anthology series makes production a tad simpler.

It could feature an all new cast and location keeping in the anthology style, so there wouldn’t be as much trouble with working in the baggage of past seasons. Outside of a few aforementioned cameos, anyway. A True Detective film could work as as stand-alone product much better than, say, The Sopranos ever would have or even the Sex and the City films.

Right now this is all wishful thinking, but you never know. Would you be interested in seeing True Detective on the big screen?
