The Third Trailer For True Detective Season 2 is Here
By Matt Pierce
In an unannounced drop, HBO has released a third trailer for the upcoming season of True Detective on YouTube, last night around 8 P.M. The shortest thus far, clocking in at only thirty seconds, this newest trailer, aptly titled “Chaos,” is fraught with tension.
HBO continues to employ new tactics with their trailer distribution, seemingly to keep fans in a state of perpetual excitement. This trailer follows the examples set forth in the first two that were released, giving us footage that seems pregnant with implications about each of our four leads.
This strategy seems to suggest that the main drama in this new season will indeed arise from the personalities the main characters, though the latter half of the trailer suggests a fair amount of visceral excitement as well.
Like the second trailer — and unlike the first— we have accompanying dialogue which, again, seems pointed and suggestive. And, of course, there are the obligatory shots of grim, unhappy faces. Would it be True Detective otherwise?

Coupled with the dialogue from the last trailer, we can begin to piece a few things together about the plot. As in the first season, the criminal element of the show seems in some way to be bound up with political interests which set the agenda for the police.
This results in at least apathy, if not active resistance to solution and justice.
Farrell’s world-weary character “welcomes judgment.” Vaughn remains appropriately menacing and unhinged. Kitsch is driven to action at the cost of his better judgment. These things have been demonstrated before.
Most interesting, though, is McAdams. All evidence seems to indicate that it may in fact be her character who takes up some species of the stark morality and drive demonstrated by Rust in the first season. The other characters are all compromised, to greater or lesser degrees.
Overall, this new trailer, though only suggestive, is certainly exciting. With the new season only two weeks away, it is increasingly harder to wait. Hopefully, fans’ excitement and dedication will be duly rewarded.
