In a press release yesterday, HBO revealed some more interesting information about the upcoming season of True Detective, continuing the steady leak of small chunks of suggestive information. Most exciting perhaps is the release of the titles for the new season’s first two episodes. Episode 1 will be titled “The Western Book of the Dead,” and was given a short synopsis:
"The disappearance of a city manager disrupts a lucrative land scheme and ignites an investigation involving three police officers and a career criminal who is moving into legitimate business."
The second episode, given no synopsis, will be titled “Night Finds You.” These episode titles do evoke some of the existential dread and tension of the first season. Also given was another, slightly more in depth introductory plot synopsis for the upcoming season. Most of this was relatively familiar information, describing both the initial case set up and character dynamics that we’ve read variations of before.
Farrell’s Ray is a “troubled detective” with torn allegiances. Vaughn’s Semyon is a “criminal and entrepreneur” whose move into legitimacy is threatened by the murder.
Kelly Riley being described as, “”Jordan Semyon, Frank’s wife, a former D-list actress who is a full partner in his enterprises and ambitions.”
McAdams’ and Kitsch’s characters also receive basically the same treatment as before. Ani Bezzerides’ “uncompromising ethics” create friction between her and less scrupulous others.
Perhaps the most interesting wording regards Kitsch’s character, Paul Woodrugh, who is running from a scandal that “never happened,” which is much less ambiguous than previous descriptions.
Kelly Reilly was also given some more attention, with her character being described as, “Jordan Semyon, Frank’s wife, a former D-list actress who is a full partner in his enterprises and ambitions.” We have high hopes for Reilly.
