Kelly Reilly will have a main role in the second season of True Detective, even though she won’t technically be one of the four leads. Reilly has been slowly working up to finally breaking into America, and True Detective might just give her that final needed push.

Kelly Reilly has had a few roles in large films that you’ve likely seen; she played Mary Morstan, Dr. Watson’s girlfriend and then wife, in both Robert Downey Jr. starring Sherlock Homes films. Beyond that, fans of British television may know her as Anna Travis, the lead from Above Suspicion.

But True Detective will hopefully introduce her to an entirely new and ready audience.

For fans of independent films, or just really sad movies in general, Reilly gave a show-stopping performance in last year’s CalvaryCalvary, by the way, also featured Game of Thrones own Little Finger (Aidan Gillen.)  Although Kelly Reilly has a starring role in her own British series, a major role in True Detective could possibly go very far in increasing her star power in the U.S.

True Detective has so far proven to have the power to revive careers, such as Matthew McConaughey, but it has yet to give truly propel someone to stardom. Alexandra Daddario has been having some luck lately in movies and televisions. Perhaps you caught her guest-starring role in The Last Man on Earth?

It will be very interesting to see what direction Kelly Reilly’s career takes after True Detective’s second season is over. Similarly, Ruth Wilson of Luther was able to successfully transition to U.S television (and further stardom) with a role in Showtime’s The Affair.

We’ll have to wait and see, but hopes are high.
