A Fan Proves a Point by Switching the True Detective and True Blood Openers

A brave fan has switched the openers of True Blood and True Detective.

The opener to True Detective season one has become somewhat famous. It has been spoofed countless times, and though it hasn’t put The Handsome Family on the chart, “Far From Any Road” has become a TV classic. It’s certainly more well-liked that season two’s Leonard Cohen song, though that one gets an unfair wrap by being attached two a season that most people hated.

A fan has stepped forward and proved something that perhaps we had all been thinking for some time: the True Detective and True Blood openers are crazy similar. In fact, if you were to switch them, not much at all is lost in the translation. Here’s the proof:

YouTube user Bad Movie Drinking Game (yes, actually) calls this little project The Swamp. It harkens back to that episode of Portlandia in which a single band does all of the dark/blusey TV theme songs. Drama TV really likes its blues.

It works really well. It’s almost depressing how well it works, as it’s just more proof that these songs are all very similar. As long as they continue to be good and work well in the show, what does it really matter that they are all basically the same?

This should now be taken a step further. How far is too far? Seeing if it works with The X-Files or Twin Peaks? The results would likely be quite surprising.
