Why Aren’t Cary Fukunaga’s New Shows Going to HBO?
Cary Fukunaga has at least two new series coming out, though neither of them will be on HBO.
Cary Fukunaga is currently a very hot commodity. He has two new series coming out within the next two years, and there is the possibility of more. It’s obvious at this point that Fukunaga has a very good working relationship with Anonymous Content, the producers behind True Detective and both of the new upcoming projects.

Anonymous Content has, so far, been a cradle for creative talent. That is most likely what drew Nic Pizzolatto to them in the first place, and vice versa. HBO owns True Detective, though it has no deal in place with Cary Fukunaga like it does with Nic Pizzolatto. Basically that means that any new series that come from Anonymous are up for grabs in terms of distribution.
While it would be cool for fans to have a Cary Fukunaga airing on the same network as True Detective, it could also prove to be a bit of a sticky situation. We don’t know what the current status is of the relationship between Nic Pizzolatto and Cary Fukunaga, but it’s not great. HBO, though eager to widen its repertoire, would likely stick to backing Pizzolatto and True Detective instead of working with Fukunaga separately.
Unfortunately we don’t have access to the networks that expressed interest in the new shows, so HBO may not have even been in the running. If they were, well, they either didn’t agree to the terms or didn’t offer enough money.
Anonymous has shows and movies spread far and wide, with little loyalty to a particular network. That may actually chance, since Netflix will be the ones to air Manaic, and they were also the ones to pick up Beasts of no Nation. One more and we’ll be comfortable calling it a pattern.
Next: Matthew McConaughey to remain the exclusive property of Lincoln.
As far as we know, HBO is just anther network bidding for content like everyone else. This time it didn’t work out for them, if they were even in it at all.
