Sherlock Holmes 3 is a Thing that is Really Happening
The Sherlock Holmes franchises features two True Detective actors.
The last time there was a Sherlock Holmes movie, Robert Downey Jr. hadn’t done Iron Man 3. Another way to say that would be to point out that’s it’s been five years at this point since Sherlock Holmes 2. Since then, both Rachel McAdams and Kelly Reilly have starred in True Detective.
According to Deadline, a new writer has joined the project to move things forward. James Coyne will rewrite a script for Sherlock Holmes 3 that will hopefully get the ball rolling. A rewritten script isn’t a guarantee of anything, and it could still be a long time before Sherlock Holmes 3 happens.

That only thin that’s in place so far is that both Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law will return. It’s not set in stone yet whether Rachel McAdams and Kelly Reilly will return for the sequel. Besides a miniseries for Sky, Reilly doesn’t have many projects in the pipeline.
Neither does Rachel McAdams, but she is now part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with her role in Doctor Strange. If Robert Downey Jr. will be able to find time to return to Sherlock Holmes, so could Rachel McAdams. We say it, so it must be.
Past True Detective actors have some of the most (potentially) exciting films of their career coming up, including Matthew McConaughey in The Dark Tower and Colin Farrell in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. The past Sherlock Holmes films were huge box office successes, though it will be a question whether or not the franchise will be still have steam after such a long time away.
Next: HBO lists True Detective as complete.
It would be preferable for McAdams and Reilly to return to Sherlock Holmes, though it could quite a while until we find out whether or not either of them will.
